Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
You're not confusing Tortola with Mayreaux, the private Island that P&O sometimes visits? That had a little Church at the top of a hill where the road wound it's way up through some quaint houses.Manoverboard wrote: ↑01 Jul 2020, 06:22I wonder if they have a small hill with a church at the top ......

Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
Tell you what ... Mobietta said the same thing about half an hour ago while we were doing our 30 mile country lane tour to escape the confines of the house. I did ask one's Captain about Mayreaux earlier but was totally ignored.towny44 wrote: ↑01 Jul 2020, 11:29You're not confusing Tortola with Mayreaux, the private Island that P&O sometimes visits? Classed as "strenuous" the hardest part was the climb of about 12 steps at the start; thereafter it was flat walking.

Funnily enough I actually prefer generous brash Americans to rude tight wad Yorkshire men

Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
Now that is one Island that we really hated and vowed never to return to. For whatever reason we felt threatened and unsafe in spite of having spent time in South Africa during the Apartheid period with all that that entailed.
A couple of ' borrowed ' pics that serve to remind me of that evil place ....

Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
I didn't like Jamaica at all
The first time we went, we went into Ocho Rios, and did an excursion to Dunns River Falls . I only wanted to take photos, so we didn't do the excursion that did the climb
Even on an excursion, there were points when we felt a bit menaced

Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
A cruise a few years later also called into Jamaica, into Montego Bay. It looked very nice from the ship.
However, we were given dire warnings not to leave the port area by ourselves and to only get a taxi into town. We didn't bother to get off the ship, as I didn't see the point in paying for a taxi only to get hassle and feel uncomfortable

Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
We had 2 port stops in Jamaica on Ventura a couple of years ago. Montego bay and Ocho Rios, the latter substituted instead of Tortola. We were not too happy but actually we quite enjoyed both places. We went on an accessible excursion in MB which finished at a jerk chicken restaurant on a jetty somewhere, quite enjoyable and in no way intimidating. At Ocho Rios we wandered through the shops near the port and ended up in one of Jimmy Buffets Margaritaville shopping centres, all places were very civilised and friendly.

Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
Grand Cayman was another major disappointment for us, we certainly expected to see a few Banks but we also expected to see a whole lot more so we booked a very expensive full days tour of the Island culminating in a lobster lunch. In no particular order we toddled off in yet another white van and after seeing nothing at all of interest for a goodly while our tour guide proudly announced that ( tis best read using a Caribbean accent ) “ On our left hand side we will be passing the Texaco Petrol Station “. We saw some lovely baby turtle type little chaps in a rather cramped raised pool and then visited the touristy town shack entitled ‘ HELL ‘. which was of course a tad different and actually a bit of fun. That left the two main highlights. Firstly the underwater adventure in a submersible within the harbour limits where one could look out of the underwater port holes and marvel at the supermarket trollies that had been dumped there in time for our cruise. These were however thoughtfully interspersed with coloured fish which were fewer in number than those on display at our local aquatic centre. At last it was time for our beachside lobster meal in a very beautiful location ... Hoo-ray, it was as tough as old boots in spite of the steep price tag
