Britannia - the future

#1

Post by Not so ancient mariner »

I am just wondering what (if any) contingency plans P&O may have for the possibility of Scotland becoming independent, and the union flag (which forms the design painted on the hull) will cease to have any meaning - as will Britannia as a political entity.

Perhaps they will just paint the hull white - and the funnels a neutral colour that has no political overtones. A nice shade of buff would look good, I think.

I personally think the vote will be in favour of staying part of the Union.

And even if the Scots vote in favour of leaving, it'd be quite a few years before this actually happened, or may not even happen at all in the end.

If it did happen, I suppose they'd just have to paint over the blue bits on the hull.

However, at a time when the future of the UK is in question, I did think it was a risky move by P&O to add the union flag as part of the logo-ing

Even if Scotland was to go independent it would be many years before the Union Flag, in its current form, ceased to be used - by which time the ships would probably be in need of another "makeover" anyway.

If the vote is yes and the rest of the UK want to continue to use the current Union flag, will Alex Salmond expect us to pay royalties for using the Saltire? ;) 8-)

I think that most comments, so far, in this topic are logical and sensible.

I implore members to keep this topic that way and not let the spectre of Scottish Independence let it degenerate, as it has in past topics.

Well done posters.

The union flag is quite a nice looking flag when compared to others.

So, even if Scotland decide to leave the union, we should keep it as it is.

There is no copyright on it so we can have whatever we want.

The red, white and blue is a good design.

The Scots can have whatever they choose. I believe that they have some sort of national emblem anyway, don't they?

There is no need to change the current design.

It won't really make any difference .. the union flag may still be adopted as the flag of the UK ... with or without Scotland.

I would hate to see any change to the Union Flag.

But if Scotland did leave the Union, I would not find it acceptable to have a symbol of a foreign country (the cross of St Andrew) on my national flag.

So if Scotland left, I think there'd be no option to change the flag. That's why I think everyone in the UK should be able to voice their opinion, not just people in Scotland.
