screwy , I would say that going south from sea area Plymouth, you may just pass into the corner of sea area Biscay and then into Fitzroy, late of Finisterre.

A little bit of Biscay but mainly FitzRoy:

As I'm sure you all know, Finisterre was changed to Fitzroy in honour of Captain Robert FitzRoy of HMS Beagle, the famous ship of Darwin. FitzRoy was a pioneer of weather forecasting - in fact he coined the term 'forecast' - and established what became the Met Office. A great man.

On all the sailings south from Southampton the Captain generally quotes Cape Finisterre as the starting or end point of the BoB, even though according to the Met charts most of the route is clearly through Fitzroy.

The Bay itself lies to the South-east of a line drawn from Brittany to North-West Spain so technically we don't normally sail through it but rough seas can extend further out into the Atlantic.

Quizzical Bob, looks like you have nailed it. Now the question will be- what's the weather like in Fitzroy at such and such a time ?

I guess the Bay goes from Finistère( in the north) to Finisterre ( in the south).

Let's not confuse the names of sea areas with shipping forcecast areas. The Bay of Biscay and Biscay do not have exactly the same boundaries. Similarly the sea area called the English Channel covers several shipping forecast areas, none of them called English Channel. So the short answer to the original question is probably "both"!
