I wonder how this has gone down with the locals, many who rely on the cruise lines for their livelihoods

But perpetuates the oft quoted myth about cruise ships in Venice on the Grand Canal. They never have and never could use that waterway. It may be grand but nowhere wide enough or deep enough for ships with the Rialto Bridge offering a considerable obstacle. Their route has always been the Guidecca Canal which is very wide and which they traverse slowly with barely a ripple. Any physical damage to the islands is caused by their own VaporettI revving their engines as they tie up to take on passengers.

All very true.

The problem with Venice, as with most other tourist traps, is the sheer volume of visitors. Many locals have deserted the city anyway and those that remain are not too bothered about the revenue that the tourists might bring. We visited it around July 1990 and it was a very pleasant place with hardly any crowds. We drove over there with our caravan but couldn't find anywhere to park ;)
