Re: Last One to Post Wins
It's raining.
Back in the day we used to get one portion of chips and a bag of crackling for five of us . The crackling was bits of batter that had fallen of the fish as it fried. If he had it our local chippy let us have a big bag for a penny and very tasty it was to.

We always called them "bits" in our neck of the woods, the chippy would scrape the bits to one side each time he put freshly fried fish onto the storage shelf, and you would ask him to serve you "wi' bits", if you wanted some, and they were and, I think, still are free.Bensham33 wrote: ↑18 Feb 2021, 12:49It's raining.

Free must have been before the war. We had to pay one old penny for them.

They say 'free', what they really mean is they had to use a ration book coupon

Apparently the first fish and chip shop to open was in Moseley nr Oldham in 1863. I wonder how much they cost then.

Re: Last One to Post Wins
My Mum always used to talk about "a fish and a penn'orth" from her childhood during WW1, and claimed the fish was twopence, 3d in total. I don't think it had increased much by my post WW2 childhood, I think chips were 2d, and fish 3d or 4d, so a full meal for 6 pence or 2.5p.

A lighter grey here today, and still quite mild.
