Two points.

First, Venice trying to cut down on tourists is like turkeys voting for Christmas. They have no other income.

Second diverting ships to a mainland port will result in large numbers of coaches busing people in to the island. Not sure how pleased they'll be with that!

From all that I've read the locals don't want too many tourists, they complain of overcrowding.

Buses wouldn't be a problem they'd just dump everbody off at the Tronchetto, which is where the present cuise terminal is.

I've read too that the locals don't want too many tourists. Just wonder where they think jobs will come from if tourism reduces.

And I know there is in theory no problem with buses. Just additional pollution and traffic over the bridge.

This idea of not wanting cruise passengers is not unique to Venice - it seems to be a growing concern in many places.

What I don't understand is why if these places don't want cruise passengers why do they keep upgrading/building new and bigger cruise terminals?

There seems to be an element of "cutting off noses to spite faces" going on

There will always be some group or other who are opposed to what the mainstream consider to be sensible progress, tree huggers when new roads are built, protesters about fracking and the like. Unfortunately the media tend to over hype their numbers and influence, because it makes for more interesting news.

We did have the experience in one Fjord port of a woman who was moaning about cruise ships in between selling over priced souvenir tat from her shop to the passengers!

But of course any destination which is concerned about the number of cruise passengers can simply say they will only accept port bookings from one, two or the number of ships they considerable acceptable each day /week. And be prepared to lose the income and jobs accordingly. It is their choice. And we can go somewhere else that values our custom.

Not if they all do it, in which case cruising will become what it is - cruising

Some of these places would not exist were it not for cruise ships and tourism. The tourist industry must be worth millions to the likes of Venice otherwise where else would they earn their money. There was talk a while ago they wanted to ban wheeled suitcases because of the noise they made. :lolno:

I suspect that with Venice having high living costs most of the people who work there can't afford to live there and that most of those who do live there don't work there, so don't really care if there are fewer jobs. They would, however, notice if their favourite shops and restaurants closed and their taxes went up because the city was earning less money.
