Re: The Problem with Captains
You’re probably right Frank, but I based my opinion of his competency on our stop at Rarotonga which was a tender port and very difficult for ships. They are unable to anchor because of the sea bed and because of the swell the ship drifts around. The locals don’t put up their stalls until they see the first tender approaching because so many ships don’t stop. We were the first to stop out about six cruise ships that season. So I think that tells you something of the competency of the captain.Frank Manning wrote:As a former seafarer (More years ago than I care to remember!) can I just say that I am not sure you can tell what they are really like at every aspect of the job

Apparently Captain Vago would regularly go into the staff quarters and mingle. He’s the only captain they said who did that. Well that’s what we were told and have no reason to disbelieve it. I have no doubt he had their respect.
And please let's not forget that lovely Italian accent which greeted me over the tannoy every morning.

"When the moon hits the sky like a big pizza pie, its amore,
and when Angelo speaks every girl's knees go weak its amore."
Eight bells ring, tingalingaling, "thank you Captain". They all say,
that his voice seems to sing, with a heavenly ring just for Emjay."
Aplogies to Dean Martin. (Oh and to Emjay's husband.)

I wonder if another world cruise with Captain Vaio is in the offing. I always thought it was cruising she enjoyed but now I'm not so sure.

I love the poem Frank but I'm afraid Captain Vago is a very happily married man and I'm a little too old for him. I did love his accent though.
OBF I have no idea who will captain the World cruises but I don't think even Captain Vago could tempt me back just yet.

I'm a bit cruised out, but I would do a full Worldie on either Aurora or Arcadia (Or Queen Vic or Lizzie) if I could persuade Sue. Sadly Sue is taking the Foreign Office's advice very literally ....no where is safe from "Johnny Foreigner"..emjay45 wrote:I love the poem Frank but I'm afraid Captain Vago is a very happily married man and I'm a little too old for him. Just returned from the Christmas/NY Caribbean cruise with Captain Camby at the helm of the Britannia - what a charmer!! All female friends (& one male) asked who the gorgeous chap was from my official photo. Sadly, his wife was on board!!!

Great captain, absolutely great with children of all ages, a great ambassador for PO cruises.
