Re: PO tips increase
Given that the so called tips are an essential part of the crew payment, because of the low basic wages they get, it is a bit odd we are allowed to choose not to pay them.
Are any other elements of the 'fare' optional?
Can we choose not to pay our share of the fuel for example?
It is most definitely because some choose not to pay that there is a steady increase in the 'optional' charge for those that do pay.
For goodness sake make it part of the fare or a compulsory extra and find a 21st century way of managing any staff who perform badly.

I would make it part of the fair. It is then up to the customer whether they feel they are still getting value for money........or book with a different company!

Re: PO tips increase
Had a letter this morning about our June cruise on Adonia to say the see ice reward programme will from 27 the March be £6 per day.
I always take the auto gratuity off and then give out the envelopes at the end of the cruise. I always leave the recommended amount. I would prefer if it was all included in the overall cost of the cruise.

Re: PO tips increase
I don't think including the tips in the fare will happen until it happens right across the board - ie all the Cruise Companies. I can see that if P&O did it then their cruises would seem to be more expensive than another cruise line which doesn't include tips, not a good selling point.

Re: PO tips increase
The party line from P&O is that "all the money paid in tips goes to the people who serve you" but, so far as I am aware, there is no breakdown as to who receives what. That information should properly be between employer and employee.

If it was published it would help people make an informed decision on Auto tip or the old envelope job. Recent cruise on Ventura the daily Ques to have them removed was to me quite staggering, on Azura 28th May I dare say it will be the same.

Re: PO tips increase
I know - it would be really interesting to learn the percentage of people who remove the auto tips and I'll wager that a massive proportion of those tip nothing at all, or far less than the "recommended" amount. As I mentioned earlier, those of us who do tip are subsidising these wasters! I'm even more certain now that auto-tipping should be made compulsory - and probably £3.00 pp per day would bring in the same (or more in some cases) as they are currently receiving !!

Re: PO tips increase
I usually leave more in my little envelopes than the recommended amount.
As a regular cruiser I couldn't in all conscience tip less. I might have the same steward or waiters again.
I actually knew someone who didn't tip the required amount and later in the year same ship and same steward !! How embarrassing would that be.

Re: PO tips increase
As I said earlier, we are quids in with this scheme as I used to tip quite a bit over the current rate.
Just leave it on a forget it is my advice.
I can't really see what all the fuss is about.

I suspect, Lindsey, that most of the people who tip little or nothing would not be embarrassed at all. Absolutely no shame !!Whynd1 wrote: ↑19 May 2017, 12:25I usually leave more in my little envelopes than the recommended amount.

I think the fuss Barney is as Cubie has set out. Because some remove the tips (often because they're tight rather than bad service) the rest of us are paying more.
I recall this was introduced because fewer and fewer people were tipping the suggested amount.
All the time the tips can be removed that will continue and as it does so they will get bigger and bigger and more and more people will remove them.
In the end one bloke will be paying £10,000 a day!

Well now we've sadly lost Shiney someone has to agree with me. And there aren't many options, though I am trying to win Jack round.

I know from a totally reliable source what happens in many restaurants to the meals of habitual non tippers but I have no idea if the ' practice ' is extended to P&O passengers ...

Could be difficult for them to do much because whilst they know who has removed the auto-tips, they don;t know until the last minute who is and who isn't going to thrust an envelope into their hot little hand !
