Madeira - Tropical Virus
My wife has just returned from donating blood but was told that she would be unable to donate blood in January as we would be calling at Madeira at Christmas (E725) where there was a tropical virus outbreak!
I have heard nothing about it on the news and was just wondering how virulent it is and if P&O know about it.

It is the same for many places - they will not accept blood donations for six months after you have been. I think it is more a precaution than anything else.

Happens to me every time I go to the Caribbean - they are pretty clued up these days and I think it's precautionary more than anything as David says. Due to donate in a few weeks time so hoping the ports I visited in July/August are not affected by any "bugs".

Madeira had an outbreak of dengue virus a few years back which actually affected very few visitors but there have been precautions since.

After the night I had with my stomach and the loo I think it's reached Costa Del Maldon.

That was the Chicken Jalfrezi - a well-known and documented tropical disease

I spoke too soon. Had a second day of it. Gastroenteritis.
Death looked quite appealing once or twice. Feeling better now though.

WHAT your tuning down a nice plate of bacteria and hand cut chips off a cracked plate I found in the skip next to the public loos.
Some fussy people about.

I'm even wary about reading his posts at the moment in case of cross-contamination !

Very sensible. And don't forget to wash you hands after poking the screen or playing with your mouse.

But to get gack on topic, we go to Madeira twice a year and have not been troubled by either the virus nor any precautionary measures. More likely to get flu at home!
