MV Viking Sky in distress ...

#1

Post by Manoverboard »

The Viking Sky ( in Norway ) has an engine failure, she is drifting and the passengers are being taken off …

Viking Sky is in distress.

Some video here. Although the commentary is in Norwegian, you can see that an evacuation will be difficult due to high winds

I bet David is glad that he was on Aurora and not on Viking Sky as I understand they were in a couple of ports at the same time. Mind you, an interesting holiday story to tell everyone.

I've just watched the video inside the ship….here - tis scary.

We have friends who were onboard her a few weeks ago.

When you are on a cruise, it always feels so safe, this is a reminder of what can happen. It looks very scary.

Can you imagine what it'd be like on Iona, trying to evacuate 6000+ people.

It was certainly rough around those parts the last few days. The Captain reported that at one point there were gusts of over 80 knots recorded on the bridge.

According to Marine Traffic App she does now appear to be moving slowly under her own power on her original course. Interesting the news reports said they were evacuating everyone on board. So I wonder who is steering!

It must be the case that the captain is upholding the maritime tradition  :)

I realised too late to edit that did seem a little flippant bit my intention was merely to point out the caution with which one has to treat some parts of media reports!

As she proceeds very slowly she now appears to have a number of tugs and other support vessels with her to assist.

Passengers being air lifted off the ship … I did wonder how the ship's crew determine who goes first.

Is the departing order determined by deck level, cabin grade or some other formula ?

She's now travelling faster at about 8 knots. Under power. According to the news now with 3 out of 4 engines and tug assistance. She's turned right round. Winds are still strong but lighter than they were and now directly on to her stern. If it's now more safe and comfortable on board I wonder if they're continuing to evaluate or will opt to get into the nearest port instead to disembark remaining passengers?

In fact latest from Viking website. Ship proceding to Molde under own power with tugs in attendance. Evacuation ended. About half the passengers and the crew still on board. Next cruise cancelled but no further cancellations expected.

She's now moments from docking in Molde. I would think there are a lot of relieved people ready to disembark.

I understand our old mate Cubie is poised on the deckside ready to hand out his cut and paste compo forms!

It just goes to prove how vulnerable cruise ships are when they lose power in rough seas…it's not as if the RNLI are going to be any use to you

Apparently Viking will be refunding all passengers the full cost of the cruise plus another cruise.

That sounds pretty reasonable. The same as P&O did when the Aurora maiden was aborted. In those sort of very public and very scary circumstances you don't want to get into a PR row with passengers.

That just shows us how much profit the luxury cruise lines make, when they can write off the revenue from 2 full cruises plus all the extra costs this one has cost them.

About 10% I think. Much cheaper than the bad publicity if they get it wrong. With such a disastrous cruise best policy is definitely put your hands up.
