Re: BAY OF ISLANDS
The other alternative at Bay Of Islands is to visit the old colonial town of Russell. Used to have a chequered past during the era of the whalers.
I also remember seeing a helicopter right on the beach at Pahia which did trips over the area.

Sue, I don't know where you will tender into - probably either Russell or possibly Paihia. This site will give you some idea of what's available from there, although there are quite a few which won't be possible due to time constraints.

Thanks Romig. Just seen your reply on the Arcadia thread. Quite fancy the cultural tour. How hot was it when you were there and which month?

No problem Sue.
We were there in November and it was mid-upper 20's. It's at a similar latitude to Sydney, so the weather is pretty good all year round.

It's a really quaint place and they tender you at Paihia and then there is a shuttle bus to go into town which is small but has cafes and places to walk the world go by. If you want to you can walk back to the tender point and this a really nice walk back if the weather is good. We were there on Valentines day last year. Weather in the morning was very good but rained quite hard later. But then this is NZ and they do have changeable weather. It is a beautiful part of NZ. There are plenty of places to go to from this port of call. I have been to Keri Keri which also a beautiful place to visit.
Have a great time.

Re: BAY OF ISLANDS
The Treaty Grounds are just a short drive (and walkable) from Pahia centre. The boat trips or helicopter flights also go from the centre.
Thanks for the confirmation of the tender port Mel.

Can't really help about the beaches. Our hotel was next to the Treaty Grounds, just outside Pahia and I went for a swim from their grounds. There were many sharp rocks, and I struggled to get out of the water as I didn't have any beach-shoes on.
I think there was some amount of beach in Pahia but can't remember how much.

Re: BAY OF ISLANDS
The tourist information for Paihia reckons they have some golden sandy beaches.
I've just remembered what else we did there...we took a river cruise to some waterfalls. It was an evening trip (with dinner) but it may be running in the day also. The company was called "Daryll's River Tours" or something similar.

The whole site looks interesting too.. http://www.paihia.co.nz/Index.cfm
