End of P&O "Gratuities"
Hurrah. Just seen in news from P&O that the discretionary service charge is to be removed from May 2019.
No more arguments about whether to pay or not. No-one getting their cruise cheaper than me!
Even better news, the first cruise to which this applies on Azura will be the one I'm on!
I wonder if Cunard will follow suit for the one on QV which I'm on the week after?

The arguments have not stopped.
It is now wrong that you have to pay twice - once in the fare and your personal tip even though the "official" line is

(I do wish P&O would get their grammar correct - it is neither/nor not neither/or!!!)tipping is neither required or expected

You'd have to pay more for correct grammar!david63 wrote: ↑20 Aug 2018, 11:23The arguments have not stopped.

I suspect the moans are from people who previously removed the auto tip and slunk away.
I also believe any increase in price will be minimal. So many people remove the tips these days (I saw a figure of more than 60%) so the average they have to make up on fares will probably only be £3 per day, or less, since everyone will be paying. £21 a week. Within the joys of fluid pricing no-one will notice.

Not wishing to blow our own trumpets but me and Stephen should be congratulated ...We've sacrificed a lot to bring this about, not just by the many letters we have sent,, but more importantly having had to carry the slur of being a pair of tight old gits..him more than me of course

Re: No More Service Charge
Great news in my opinion and actually puts it to bed once and for all.
Well done P&O
Plus … we have done well out of it as our May 2019 cruise falls into this, so they can fluid price as much as they like to make up the difference.
The current price for our cabin grade is currently + £1,474 to the price we have paid. Plus we have £400 OBC that we can spend on us .

Re: No More Service Charge
Carnival killed the golden goose by the rapid increases.
No doubt it will be recouped elsewhere.
If it goes on the main price of the cruise that will seem to be the fairest way.

I totally agree with you Lindsey. If it is added to the price then it is down to you to decide if you want to book the cruise or go elsewhere.

Great news. They should have done this years ago. Some on the P&O Fb site aren't happy bunnies though.

Probably the ones who remove the charge with no intention of tipping. The ones I've been subsidising. Let them bleat!oldbluefox wrote: ↑20 Aug 2018, 18:52Great news. They should have done this years ago. Some on the P&O Fb site aren't happy bunnies though.

I agree Merv. I've always felt we were subsidising the non tippers. It is good news even though our next cruise is before May so I suppose we'll be subsidising some people as usual.Mervyn and Trish wrote: ↑20 Aug 2018, 21:47Probably the ones who remove the charge with no intention of tipping. It's amazing the number of people on FB commenting on this without checking the detail. The latest I see assumes we're returning to recommended manual tipping rather than the stated "tips not required".

That's the nature of Facecloth - you just comment without reading - in fact I think that reading is beyond the capabilities of many FB usersMervyn and Trish wrote: ↑21 Aug 2018, 08:01It's amazing the number of people on FB commenting on this without checking the detail.

Re: No More Service Charge
One thing that has been puzzling me is why it is starting in July 2019, as these types of things normally come into effect March/April. Then it dawned on me that the crew are on nine/ten month contracts which would imply that the crew will be on new T&Cs from July next year - whether those T&Cs are better or worse is something remains to be seen, and that may be the reason why there have been some reports recently about "unhappy" crew.
I do, however, have a gut feeling that overall the "front facing" crew will be worse off. If, as is alleged, that P&O make up the service charge for those who remove it in order to pay the "variable" wage then that will still be the same. Where there will be a difference is that some/many/most who remove the auto service charge then give the equivalent in cash and that that will stop, or at best be drastically reduced - I can say quite categorically that whilst I may give a small cash tip to someone who, in my opinion, deserves it that it will be nowhere near £7pppd.
