Formal nights on Iona

#1

Post by Gort60 »

Just checked with P&O regarding formal nights on Iona. Although the policy is 2 formal nights on a 7 night cruise and 4 on a 14 night, Iona will only hold 1 and 2 formal nights respectively. Very disappointing. We hope this is not going to be a change to policy on all the P&O cruise ships.

I suspect that sooner or later that will become the norm on the family ships and then on all ships - give it five years

Is it really worth taking formal clothing just for a night?

I would be happy to creep up to the buffet for that night. As I have said before there are many people who have offended me in speech and actions on a “ formal “ night but I would hate to offend anyone by me being dressed smart casual!!

Seems a shame to only have 1 formal night but maybe they have found in the family ships less people comply. Mind you it won't stop my daughter wearing her poshest frocks, she would wear them all day everyday of she could!

We enjoy formal nights and on that basis Iona wouldn't be our first choice when we take our granddaughters for their first cruise in a couple of years. They just love dressing up. But at the moment if we go with P&O to the Fjords, which was our plan, it looks to get the only choice at present. For just the two of us I think we're drifting away.

Yes. Normally around 2 per week. One on our four nighter. But oddly it was described as Smart Casual/Formal (optional). That may be just because it was a short cruise.

On our 13 night Saga cruise we had 3 formalnights and they were very well supported.

We would certainly avoid a single formal night and go ' elegant casual ' to one of the alternate ( chargeable ) dining venues.

Formality on Iona will deffo diminish over the next few years, as D63 stated.

I wouldn't bother packing my formal attire just for one night but since I am not keen on the big ships anyway that problem will not arise. Once they introduce it to the medium sized ships I will be looking elsewhere for my more traditional cruising experience. (Actually, looking at the general direction P&O are heading we have already started looking at alternatives :( )

The likes of Epicurean and Sindhu require Black Tie on those nights so that would limit your options

They were my thoughts too.

The only places I can think of where you would get away without formal attire is the buffet and the pub/Andersons, or equivalent.

Are you sure about that ?

We have ducked formals on several occasion due to the rubbish menus and the alternate dining venues were deffo Smart Caj.

The back up plan is to wear a light jacket and tie and remove both once seated … done that too as have umpteen others.

Glass house and Beach house accept smart casual on formal nights, as well as the Buffet.

Are you sure about the Glass House? This page seems to think the dress code applies (and I can't remember one way or the other)

That surprises me. I always thought formal for in there was just a clean vest :D

Are you sure it wasn't a case of some formal attired passengers wandering in there for a football and pint fix.

I shall have a look when I'm on Azura.

Just had a similar discussion on CC, however it was definitely only smart casual on black tie nights on our cruise last January. Maybe the website is, as usual, out of date or just plain wrong.

You can wear what you like in Anderson's on Azura and Ventura, that's because they dont have one.
