River Cruise - Romantic Danube - Viking Njord Part 3
Day 3 - 4
At our daily briefing yesterday evening, Programme Director Valentin confirmed
that the river levels were high enough for us to sail to Passau. This
information was met with cheers and applause. What a relief!
We found ourselves a table for six in the dining room and were joined by a
couple from the Wirral, and an American mum and daughter, who we'd shared a
table with previously. I'm getting a bit more into this sharing a table lark,
as we again had good company. But the dining room is still a bit loud for me,
and although the food is lovely, I'm not taking as much notice of it as I would
like, as I need to concentrate quite hard on what people are saying.
After dinner we attended a little musical interlude in the lounge, provided by
some local performers - The Sound of Music and some light opera, both things are
right up my street.
This morning we safely arrived in Passau, and did our included excursion, a walk
in the town, followed by an organ concert in the Cathedral, on the world's
biggest organ! Valentin handed out the tickets for the concert at the Cathedral
door. But we only got one if we gave the right password, which was 'Comrade'!
Tonight's eating arrangements are going to be different, as it's a 'taste of
Austria', with buffets all over the ship, so not quite sure how it will work.
Just thought it'd be of interest to say a word about the cabins. There are a
couple of suites, cabins with balconies, cabins with French balconies, and
cabins at the water line with very small windows. We have one of the French
balcony cabins. This means there is a patio door, but you can't step outside.
There's a bar and Perspex panel to lean on, so the cabin becomes the balcony (if
that makes sense).
The cabin is quite small, smaller than a similar grade cruise
ship cabin. As you step into the cabin, the small wardrobe is on one side and
the bathroom is on the other. As you proceed further into the cabin, there is a
counter, with the fridge and four drawers underneath, and the dressing table area, with a
small stool at the dressing table. There is a large wall hung TV, at least 40
inches. The bed takes up most of the rest of the floor space. There's no other
chair, so you sit on the bed to look out of the window.
The shower room is interesting. It is enclosed in glass. This glass can either be
clear, or you turn a handle and it becomes opaque. The shower cubicle is about
half the size of the shower room. So there is not much space for the loo and
the sink is tiny. There's a few little shelves and nice L'Occitane toiletries.
There is no kettle in the cabin. But there is the coffee station, just as you enter the
lounge. You can make yourself tea ( massive selection of tea bags) or use the
coffee machine to have latte, cappuccino, or hot chocolate. If you want to drink
in the lounge you can have your drink in a cup, if it's to go, you use a
cardboard cup and lid. I have to say, I love the coffee station. I'm slightly
addicted to the hot chocolate. If's great to get decent beverages at no extra
cost, and is a 100 times better than the dodgy tasting coffee you get in say,
The Belvedere or what you can make in your cabin.

Fascinating reading, Gill. I would have totally gone to pieces at the airport if my suitcases had not turned up and then had trouble finding the rep. Glad your worries about the low water levels sorted themselves out.

I think I kept it together at the airport as we were with the other couple.
I felt I couldn't lose the plot in front of people I'd only just met..... if it'd just been me and Mr Gill, I'd have probably kicked off big time!
