Can anyone help a friend who's going on Oriana mid September?

Where is she is likely to dock at Naples? How far is it to walk to city - is there a shuttle bus - recommended trips etc.

Many thanks,
Jill

When we were last there the ship docked very much centrally and there were plenty of people walking into town, past numerous hawkers trying to sell all manner of dubious items. People we shared a table with had walked into town and gone to the museum where all the artefacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum are exhibited.
We had a tour out to Pompeii which was well worth seeing. The next time we go I would like to visit Herculaneum. Other tours went to Capri and a drive down the Amalfi coast, which is pretty spectacular but not so good if it is tipping it down with rain, as it was when we did it!!! Amusingly there was a vendor selling umbrellas for 3 Euros each when we arrived. They must have been single use as everybody who bought them complained they had fallen apart . Of course the vendor was nowhere to be seen when they got back to the coaches!!!

When we were last in Naples we did the ship's excursion to Sorrento and Pompeii. As per usual it was blatantly obvious that the tour guide thought that the sole purpose of the excursion was for various people to pay him - including ticket office at Pompeii, various traders and a restaurant in Sorrento!

Pompeii is awesome, even though the excavation work there needs to go on for decades yet. However, we are also very much aware of Herculaneum, and if/when we are in Naples again our main interest is going to be Herculaneum - it's much more interesting, and I can't wait to return.

Whilst the drive to Sorrento is picturesque and the town itself bustling and charming, the views which are clear of the less fortunate parts of Naples and the hovels/shacks were a sad sight.

We certainly don't regret that particular lovely cruise we did on Arcadia, but if we were in Naples again, it would have to be purely and simply Herculaneum. If you are eating out in Herculaneum etc., beware 'hidden' charges for cutlery and napkins!!!

As Foxy says Pompeii or Herculaneum are well worth a visit, the last time we were in Naples we did Sorrento 'on your own' which is a lovely place to visit and of course spectacular views en route of the Amalfi coast, we haven't been to Capri but that is top of the list for the next visit.

I read somewhere that Capri has become heavily commercialised but nevertheless it would make for a lovely excursion. Trouble is I want to do Herculaneum as well so it lookslike I'll have to have another cruise with Naples on the itinerary.
Actually with so much to do from Naples it would make a decent two day stop over as per St Petersburg.

This is what I wrote in my diary when we were there in 2011.

We buy a Unico Campania U2 day ticket each for €6.3 from the kiosk and catch the number 1 tram to Napoli Centrale train station. We then catch the Circumvesuviana, which runs between Naples and Sorrento to Ercolano Scavi; both tram and train are covered by the day ticket. It’s a 10 min walk down the main street to Herculaneum. The whole journey took about 50 min.
The entrance fee was €11 but John got in for free (EU citizen over 65); P&O wanted £45. We spent three and a half hours looking round the excavated site then returned to the ship in time for afternoon tea. At the train station taxi drivers were offering mini-bus trips to Vesuvius for €10 return per person.

We are on the same cruise and have booked the tour Pompeii on your own. Our friends have been there before and enjoyed it so much they wanted to go again.

We join Oriana on Friday and are staying on for the following cruise.

Naples ... as stated the ships tend to ' Park ' centrally, we were there in June 2016. Facing the sea turn to the right along the coastline and wander up to the Royal Palace, one time home of the Bourbon Monarchs, now known as Palazzo Reale. It is the architecture that you are going to see rather than the artworks. Do your research as they may be closed on your arrival day .... how do I know this, never you mind.
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

Yes, as MoB says it is always a very good idea to check for public holidays and saints days. Have a great time, but after our recent 'mugging' experience in Rome, please be very careful and enjoy yourself.

The Naples Archaeological museum is closed on Tuesdays, as I know to my chagrin.
