Put the shares in joint names, buy end of March 2020 then maybe sell end of April 2021 and you won't even come close to paying CGT on the amount you seem to be suggestingStephen wrote: ↑09 Mar 2020, 14:58Haven't done anything yet about shares. I don't like giving the tax man money on capital gains.
There was a mention about taking out an ISA but the interest on them is rubbish. Then there was a thought about investing in premium bonds but what are the chances of winning anything.

anniec wrote: ↑09 Mar 2020, 15:35I got 1.6% on the maximum holding last year, sometimes £25 a month, sometimes £75 or £100. Not a vast amount, but a bit better than a bog-standard savings account. Only worth doing if you have a bit to invest, but it's a bit of fun. Very difficult to know what to do, but I'd rather the capital was safe than gambling on anything I don't fully understand.Stephen wrote: ↑09 Mar 2020, 14:58Haven't done anything yet about shares. ISAs only worth having if you've got enough squirreled away to pay tax on interest.
Hi anniec
I'm warming to investing a few bob into the old bonds. At least you can snatch your capital back should you need it, and as you say I might win a few bob along the way.

I would just like to add that you need a minimum of 100 shares in order to get the onboard credit that goes with them.Stephen wrote: ↑09 Mar 2020, 09:51I'm thinking about buying some Carnival share but am not sure what the price is or where to get them.
Being a total novice I'm not sure what the figures mean which I got from this site
https://www.hl.co.uk/partners/search/bu ... 26EALw_wcB
Carnival plc Ordinary USD1.66
Sell: 1,873.00p
Buy: 1,878.00p
I bought may share over fifteen years ago when they were £19.46. During that time we have had onboard credit for over 30 cruises and for most years a reasonable dividend. The price/earnings ratio must have improved too.

We have been lucky with Premium Bonds this past year, earning over 2% on our holding.

I'm holding out for a further drop. A tenner a share would be the figure I'm looking at. Maybe wishful thinking, we shall see.

Done the deed and purchased 100 shares @ roughly £17.60p
Got in a right pickle and panic. And of course more time spent faffing around the price is going up. Still, it's all sorted now with the help of a lovely patient lady on the help line who had all the time in the world.

Re: Could Corona-virus be disastrous for the cruise industry
How does it work barney, do I need to contact P&O?
Do I get extra OBC on top of what I already have with cruises already booked?

Re: Could Corona-virus be disastrous for the cruise industry
Yes you do need to contact P&O to prove that you own the shares.
Details here
https://ask.pocruises.com/help/PO/befor ... are-holder
I do a screen print showing my holding and email it to P&O as shown in the above link.
You should get confirmation within a few days (usually next day).
A revised P&O invoice showing the additional OBC will be sent to your TA.
The OBC is on top of any other credit you may have.

Don’t look anymore
It’s a bit like checking the cruise price after you have booked.
Think long term, a few years at least

Re: Could Corona-virus be disastrous for the cruise industry
The novelty will soon wear off . I'll keep a bit of an eye on prices in case they come down to a tenner, then I might be tempted.
One thing I hardly ever do is re-check cruis pricings.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a suspension of dividends for a while.

I think you're right QB, which is a factor in the price failing.
