Venice bans cruise ships from waterways
I don't think it comes as much of a surprise

I am only glad that we got to enjoy the cruise along the canal whose name I can never remember.

We parked by the ' Arsenale ' just along a bit from the main hot spots, that was with Princess.

If I am not mistaken Venice have been threatening to ban cruise ships for years.

And why not ... actually it's the area where Venetian ships of war were once constructedKendhni wrote: ↑14 Jul 2021, 13:35That has to be a euphemismManoverboard wrote: ↑14 Jul 2021, 13:32We parked by the ' Arsenale ' just along a bit from the main hot spots, that was with Princess.

Let's hope they ban their vaporetti too. Revving their engines in gear and churning up the water while loading and unloading passengers at the landing stages must do far more to undermine the islands than slow moving cruise ships making barely a ripple in the wide and comparatively deep Guidecca Canal. And let's hope too they're ready either for clouds of diesel fumes from the shuttle buses that replace the ships or the collapse of their tourist dependent economy.

I wonder how long that ban will last once they see the coffers drop dramatically.

So had I - I guess they are using island time to make decisions.

I don’t know how much disbursement of water there is with a cruise passing through but what I do know is that their water taxis create more of a wake than what cruise ships do.
I can however understand them not wanting cruise ships passing through the canal…it looks awful from the shore line.
I can’t see why cruise ships can’t dock and disembark in the lagoon then ferry in from there? It would mean slower disembarkation but less so with favourable terms from the vaporetti operators.

I guess they will have had 18 months experience of no cruise ship tourists, and if they are still in business then they might well be prepared to give this embargo a trial.

We've had 18 months of business paralysis. Would we vote to continue? I guess, like ours, the Italian government will have supported business in the pandemic. Will that continue?

so they are going to Marghera instead. If you look at the map - that is only accessed through the lagoon too- so how do they get round that?
Couldn't they approach the cruise terminal from the other direction?

The plan was to use an alternative route via a southern entrance to the lagoon. I don’t know how they are getting on with this but it involves dredging the approach to the port area. Some protesters are against this because it involves an increase in the amount of water flowing in and out of the lagoon.
I agree with others that the slow passage of a large ship has minimal effect upon the city itself apart from the visual aspects. The wake from the vaporetti is far more damaging.
There are a lot of commercial shipping activities in the port that are not cruise related although cruising is an important part of their economy. Venice is a turn around port for some operators.

if they use the southern entrance - they could go direct to the terminal w/o touching the city - so no longer megaliths dwarfing San MarcoQuizzical Bob wrote: ↑15 Jul 2021, 10:49The plan was to use an alternative route via a southern entrance to the lagoon. Yep, that's the idea, except that there is still a lot of work to do to make that route viable including building terminal facilities at the commercial port.

It's not always about the depth, sometimes it is about the width.

Re: Venice bans cruise ships from waterways
The channel would need dredging to accommodate cruise ships and in Italy these things take time.
