Ventura June cruise (Sue and Garry)

#1

Post by Suekersh »

Morning all
Had a nice suprise in my inbox this morning. Sue and Garry are onboard the Ventura.

Friday/ Saturday 3 & 4 June 2022 Boarding day

We had an early start as needed to do the Randox Antigen test before departing for Southampton.
This was very straightforward and easy to scan and up load to Randox on their CertiFly App. The certificate showing negative arrived very promptly, we printed them off and added them to file full of paperwork required for this cruise.

We set off for Southampton at 07:30 for our overnight stay in the Elizabeth House hotel. Despite the dire warnings about serious traffic problems because of the Bank Holiday the journey was straightforward up to reaching the M3 where it slowed down considerably but at least we kept moving.

We were settled into our room by 2p.m. And relaxed with a bottle of wine. The holiday had begun.

Saturday 4 June embarkation day.

We had booked a taxi for 11:15 am from West Quay cars who as usual were very reliable and on time. We had a terminal change to City Terminal a couple of weeks ago which must be the worst organised terminal ever. There was no signage and when we got out of the taxi and asked for directions to the baggage drop off found it was a 500 yd walk. Luckily we found one abandoned trolley and managed to fit most of luggage onto it for the trek past the terminal building.

Once baggage was dropped we made our way to join the queue for certificates to be checked, followed by another checking passports, boarding passes, vaccinations, testing certificate again, before then being split into two lanes one for priority and another one.
Through security then into yet another queue to have our boarding pass checked again and the verbal Health declaration check, before finally getting to the check in desk where our passports and documentation were checked again and our photograph taken.

Just as we got through, the announcement was made that priority passengers could now make their way onto the ship. Everything seemed to take so long because of the disorganisation but we were actually on board Ventura for just after 12:30 pm and in the priority luncheon which on Ventura is a sit down lunch menu rather than a buffet lunch. Our friends were only about 5 minutes behind us and joined us at our table.

By the time we had finished lunch had a few glasses of bubbles and wine the announcement came that our cabins were ready. Our luggage was waiting for us and we were soon un packed and settled into our C deck balcony cabin on the starboard side. We only realised much later how lucky we were as announcements were made regarding baggage still in the process of being delivered.

During the afternoon I received a phone call from Diana the senior loyalty manager congratulating us on being the most travelled guests on board. Although we have cruised extensively we have never been the the most travelled before. We have now been given extra OBC which we will use for another select dining evening.

Captain Alan Hawkins gave his pre departure speech and Ventura finally left the berth just after 6 pm as we were having pre dinner drinks on the balcony with our friends.

We had booked a table for 4 in club dining and we had been allocated a lovely table by the window. An excellent meal to start the cruise and looking forward to many more. We saw many crew and officers that we have met over the years who stopped by our table to welcome us on board.

The show in the theatre was ‘On the Horizon’ which we all enjoyed despite having seen it on previous cruises. John Bartram is the Cruise Director.

Lots going on around Ventura which is trimmed up to recognise the Jubilee.

Sunday, 5 June

An early start as I made my way to the front of the ship and the 7:30 am Fab Abs Class. There were only 5 of us made the class but no doubt it will get busier as the cruise goes on. The weather was good although there had been rain overnight.

We pottered about during the morning getting our bearings again before heading up to the Facebook meeting by the Terrace bar. Although the sun was out it was still quite chilly up there.
Battle of the sexes was in the Exchange at Noon and the Ladies won the day but only because of getting the Bonus Question correct.

Ventura entered the very calm Bay of Biscay around Noon as we made our way South towards our first port call in Madeira on Wednesday.

It was the first formal night and special Jubilee celebration menu.

We started the evening in the Red bar which overlooks the fabulous Atrium, with our Celebration bubbles.

Captain Alan gave the figures for the cruise at approx 2,470 passengers of which approx 600 passengers were new to P & 0 and 47 different nationalities amongst the crew.

The Jubilee Celebration Meal was excellent both the menu choices and the quality of the food. Our waiters Jonas and Jay Dee are attentive and friendly, our wine waiter is Ernie ‘the fastest wine waiter in the West’ and Joseph is our very friendly and knowledgeable diet waiter who brings the menu for the following day and takes our pre orders.

It is a totally different atmosphere from our last cruise on Aurora and this is down to the senior management and leadership on board.

The Trawlermen were the entertainment in the theatre and were like a breath of fresh air. Sea Shanty’s and folk music made a welcome change to to the usual musicals from the West End.

We finished the evening in the atrium area where there was dancing. Normally we would have joined in but we were happy just sat chatting and drinking.

There are still some restrictions due to Covid but it now feels almost like normal. We are very much aware it is still around and are amongst the few who still wear our mask in the theatre and along the narrow passageways if there are other passengers around.

Monday 6 June

We started the day a bit later than normal after the excesses of the Celebration night and had a later leisurely breakfast in the Epicurean restaurant which was a nice treat. A very similar menu but much quieter and less rushed.

The Ladies didn’t do as well in the Battle of the sexes . The men are now 90 points in the lead but at 30 points per question easily caught up.

We had booked dinner in the Glass House which as usual was exceptional. We shared the three tapas starters between us huge prawns on a bed of patatas bravos, Juicy scallops and Smoked Salmon Scotch egg. I followed with the Sicilian Fish stew which I think I could eat every day and Garry opted for the Surf & Turf. We opted for Cheese & biscuits to finish but our friends sampled the 3 small desert dishes and as they both have a sweet tooth they had 3 each.
It was a great success and no doubt we will be repeating the experience next week.

Tuesday 7 June

Garry decided it was a good morning to catch up on the laundry. We are on the Starboard side of the ship and as we are sailing South don’t get the sun on our balcony until after lunch.

The Ladies won the day in the Battle of the sexes but there is very little in it. No battle now until we leave the Canaries as we have five consecutive port days.

We had a lazy afternoon soaking up the rays on the balcony before another excellent dinner in the Main Dining Room where I had a delicious fish feast again.

Jason Keeler performed in the theatre. He has an amazing voice and the theatre was packed out.

Tomorrow we arrive in Madeira our 1 st port of call.

Thanks Sue. I'm really looking forward to reading your postings. It's almost as good as going on the cruise as it's easy to imagine having been on Ventura a few times. Thinking about returning to cruising, maybe later this year, I'll see.

Have a wonderful time.

Interesting that there are wine waiters on Ventura - certainly none on Britannia. Perhaps the start of re-introducing them.

Morning all from a wet Swansea.
A further update from Sue and Garry.

Wednesday, 8 June 2022 - Madeira

A glorious hot day greeted us and I woke early as my phone picked up a signal at around 04:30 which gave us plenty of time to catch up with e mails etc before meeting our friends for breakfast.

We caught the shuttle into the town then walked along the front to the cable car station. There was a queue but it moved very quickly. 18 euros each return.

The queue for the toboggan ride was the longest I had ever seen it but luckily that wasn’t in our plans for today. We walked through the wooded area to the top of Monte and found a bar with stunning views. We started on beer then moved onto Sangria. Pastel de Nata are a must when visiting Madeira and today was no different.

Fed and watered we headed back through the gardens for the cable car ride back to town and walked through the street with the painted doors and into the market area in search of more Pastel de Nata to take on board. Unfortunately they had sold out but we managed to stock up at the supermarket along with other cabin essentials including Marmite as there is none on the ship.

Captain Alan announced just before 5 pm that Ventura was ready to sail and that Carla the 3 rd deck officer was going to manoeuvre the ship off the dock for the first time and she made an excellent job of. It.

Our friends arrived for champagne on the balcony before we headed to Sindhu for our evening meal. It really is worth booking these select dining venues before boarding the ship. The £10 pp (less loyalty discount) deposit you pay out then gives you 20% discount off the total bill.

A comedian Ian Jones (mimicking Lee Evans) was supposed to join the ship yesterday but didn’t so the entertainment was changed to a game show. We went to listen to Wayne Denton a John Denver tribute act. We have seen him before many years ago and enjoyed his performance again.

The headliners show was Hot ticket which we decided against going to the late show as we are staying on board for the next cruise and will see this show then.

Tomorrow we dock in La Palma.

A nice update from Sue and Garry for us all.

Thursday, 9 June 2022 - La Palma

Another hot sunny day in La Palma. This lovely coastal town is not on all of the Canary Islands itineraries but we have managed to call here a number of times. The interior is or was before the volcanic eruption the best of the islands for flora & fauna, as well as the clear skies for astronomers. We weren’t really interested in seeing the devastation the volcanic eruption had caused on the other side of the island so walked into town to make a donation to the economy.

It is a quaint picturesque Spanish town with Romeo and Juliet style balconies full of flowers.
Shopping done we found a bar to sample the local beer and then headed down to a tapas bar we had found on a previous call here. It was packed and we had a short wait to secure a table. There was only one waiter serving around twenty tables and he definitely needed help although once ordered the drinks and food arrived quickly.

The afternoon sun was on our balcony and although I considered going onto the deck for a swim laziness took over and I dozed the afternoon away. Once the local children were out of school the dark sand beach opposite Ventura got busier and the children were learning to sail in small boats around marina.

It was our second formal night and another excellent Marco menu in the MDR. The entertainment in the theatre was the Trawlermens 2nd and final show for this cruise. Once again they got a standing ovation.

Tomorrow we are in Tenerife.

Thank you Moby.

Here is this mornings report.

Friday, 10 June 2022 - Tenerife

The port for Tenerife is Santa Cruz in the North of the Island.
On previous cruises we have done trips to Playa Las Americas and Puerta de La Cruz but as the journey is about an hour each way it reduces the time allocated in the resorts. Mount Teide appears to be the main attraction here but having been there a few years ago we decided to stay local and walk into the old part of the City.

Our friends had never visited the Senora de Africa Market area which is situated a fair walk from the cruise terminal in the older more traditional part of the city so this was where we headed.

It was very hot and and the first thing we did was to head to the bar for liquid refreshments. It was a ticket system as the tables were all full but it didn’t take long before one became available. There were three seats in the shade and one in the sun so I offered to take the sunny one being the only sun lover, but because of that I decided I deserved 2 beers as the first one didn’t touch the sides.

The market is mainly fish, flowers fruit and veg for the locals but there is a floor with vendors selling their crafts. Mainly paintings and jewellery, downstairs is a supermarket and the fish area including the tapas bars. It all looked very inviting but the smell of fish was overpowering so decided to find an outside bar for our lunch.

I opted for a mixed fish salad and the others what used to be known as a Russian Salad but now the name has been changed to ‘Spanish potato salad’ exactly the same dish but with a new name.
Croquettes and Spanish Omelette ensured we wouldn’t go hungry on the trek back to the ship and a large jug of Sangria for us ladies full of fruit (which saved buying a desert) went down well.

When we returned to our cabin the sun had moved over to the port side which was a welcome relief after having been in the sun since 10 am.

The ship doesn’t sail until 10 p.m. but as the Spanish dinner time is late especially in the summer months we would have struggled to have a nice dinner out and get back to the ship before 10 p.m so we opted for the Main Dining Room.

Another excellent meal with empty plates all round and my favourite Ginger sorbet to go with the fruit salad for desert.

Jason Keeler was performing in the theatre and although he has a fabulous voice it just isn’t our favourite music. Our friends went to the theatre and we had a look at the Horizon to see what was going on in the other venues.

We decided to watch the evening sailaway from our balcony with a drink and have a relaxing night in readiness for Gran Canaria tomorrow.

Saturday, 11 June 2022 - Gran Canaria
I thought it was never going to get light this morning and when it did it was very overcast and drizzling.

Anthem of the Seas joined us in port and blocked any view of Gran Canaria for the balconies on the Port Side. Our view on the Starboard side was better but not much as the port area was full of rust buckets.

We had hoped to eat breakfast outside but it was quite cool because of the wind. We have never been to Gran Canaria at any time of the year without the sun shining.

We spent some time in the mall before heading up the Main Street which leads to the lovely beach.
There were different stalls selling their wares all down the street and they seemed to be doing a good trade because of the weather. If the sun had been out many would just have rushed past to get their spot on the beach.

Typically we had planned a Beach day here. As the men don’t ‘do’ beaches this would have been the perfect place as there are bars all along the promenade and they could have stayed there and passed the beer down to us.
There were some brave souls on the beach and in the sea, also some P & O blue towels dotted around.

Because of the fierce wind It was even too cold to sit at an outside table on the front so had a coffee inside. We passed a Fred Olsen ticket office and I suggested we find out how much a day ticket to go back to Tenerife was.

As the day progressed and we left the front the wind wasn’t as fierce although the sun still hadn’t made an appearance, and by 1 p.m. we had a table outside El Manue a tapas bar we had found pre Covid and hadn’t been open when we visited here at Christmas.

The tapas was as good as we remembered with Prawn Pil Pil, chicken kebabs, canarian wrinkly potatoes with red sauce, Spanish potato Salad, fresh hot bread with Aioli and a jug of Sangria.

After we had eaten there was still no sign of the sun breaking through so we headed back to the ship and Garry did a load of laundry.

It was reasonably warm on our balcony and if the sun had been out it would have been on there, at least we were sheltered from the wind.

After dinner in the main dining room we went straight to the Tamarind Club to secure seats for the Tribute to Neil Diamond by Wayne Denton. As we suspected it was full well before the show started. Instead of backing tracks the Ventura Orchestra accompanied Wayne. It was a fabulous show and he had a standing ovation at the end with almost everyone stood up singing and swaying to ‘Sweet Caroline.

The Headliners show in the theatre was Reel to Reel and comedian Ian Jones as Lee Evans in the Havana. Lots of choice tonight and if timed right pax could see the 7 pm show in the Havana, followed by the 8:30 show in the theatre and the 9:30 show in the Tamarind.

Tomorrow we are in Lanzarote and hoping for the better weather which is forecast.

Morning all.
Another lovely update from Sue and Garry.

Sunday 12 June 2022 - Lanzarote

The plan for today was to visit Teguise an old town about 20 minutes taxi ride from Arecife. As it is a Sunday Arecife has little to offer both Crew and passengers although there is a lovely marina with nice restaurants and bars but not enough to cope with 2500 pax plus Crew.

Some years ago P & O had a tour to visit Teguise and it’s Sunday market. It wasn’t listed as a trip so I sent an Email to the tourist board who confirmed that the Sunday market would be on and advised getting a Taxi there.

It was warmer than yesterday but the cloud and wind was still sticking around. Teguise village is quite high so my first purchase was a pashmina shawl to keep the wind at bay.
There were lots of Handbag stalls as well as jewellery and leather stalls. About 200 Stalls in total selling everything under the sun except today it was under the clouds. The stall holders looked so cold and many were wrapped up in winter clothes.

We donated quite a few euros to the local economy before finding a bar to sit down and recover. The market was very busy and as we had arrived early we were lucky to have got around the majority of stalls before the masses descended.

There was a shortage of toilet facilities and the queues were horrendous at both the bar where we had a drink at and the main toilet block. We found another bar and they were charging a euro but only had one working ladies cubicle, 2 mens urinals and a cubicle in the mens. The owner directed me into the mens cubicle which was fine except I then had to walk out and found 2 men using the urinals who hadn’t realised I was in the cubicle. When in Spain etc....

When we returned to the ship the cloud had dispersed and it was a lovely afternoon.

Departure time was scheduled for 17:30 and two ladies names were called out who we presumed hadn’t made it back to the ship on time.
Luckily for them the wind was too high for the ship to safely manoeuvre away from the dockside. The Captain announced all back on board but it was forecast to be another hour before the wind died down enough to depart.

We were dining in the Epicurean and the vibration and noise up there was dreadful as the ships engine, thrusters or whatever were continuously working. Eventually the Captain must have decided to give up trying to get out of the harbour as the awful noise and vibration ceased.

It was an excellent meal. Menu 2 which includes the lobster and as usual the service was excellent. We all ate and drank far too much. The chef recommended the desert sharing plate and the cheese board so we had both and a glass of port with the cheese.
None of the entertainment appealed as Manuel Martinez was in the theatre so we made the meal our entertainment for the night.

When we returned to the cabin, Ventura was still on the berth but a tug was right under our balcony keeping it steady. Not long afterwards we finally moved away and sailed out of the harbour.

The clocks went forward an hour in readiness for our call into Cadiz on Tuesday.

What a treat another report today.

Monday 13 June - Sea day to Cadiz

After last nights excesses we had a later start to day. The weather was overcast although warm and the seas smooth.

We had a look round the shops and collected the daily newspaper crossword etc before returning to the cabin. To get ready for our Peninsular lunch at noon.

There was no sign of the Captain as he was busy conducting weddings and renewal of vows.

It was a new improved menu from our March cruise on Aurora and we all enjoyed it. John Bartram stood in for the Captain and gave the facts and figures for the cruise as well as announcing us as the most travelled P & O passengers on board. As usual after these boozey lunches we returned to the cabin to sleep it off.

It was the third formal night of the cruise and a voucher for a celebration drink was delivered to the cabin in lieu of the usual Peninsular party. We still have our sailaway party vouchers left from the 1 st day on board.

Another excellent meal and the Arctic char seemed very popular.

The Tap Step brothers were in the theatre and had been highly recommended. They were very good but 3/4 hour watching tap dancing is too long and they had padded their performance out by playing videos on the screen whilst changing. There was also some audience participation by clapping but unfortunately the Ventura audience just didn’t get the ‘gist’ of what they were meant to do i.e, clap in time to the music.

A lot of pax left at this point but we stuck it out to the end and pleased we did because the last 15 minutes was all Irish dancing. They were amazing.

Tomorrow we are in Cadiz and the forecast is hot hot hot.

Hi all, todays cruise report from Sue and Garry.

Tuesday, 14 June 2022 - Cadiz

This is one of our favourite Spanish ports as it is so easy to just wander into. Lots of local bars, shops and restaurants. It always feels clean and cared for. The cathedral is worth seeing as are many;of the old buildings and architecture.

We did a bit of shopping before settling into a local bar for a drink but no churros this time as we had all had a big breakfast.

There is a small market area here and the men bought belts and we bought another handbag. We called into Carrefour for some supplies to see us back to Southampton, then to our favourite fishy tapas bar near the market. Sangria, huge prawns, squid, Russian salad, and Spanish bread. Enough to put us onto dinner.

It was a glorious hot day and the sun was on our balcony when we returned to the ship. It was so hot the Crabbes went down very quickly.

There was a speciality Paella in the buffet for dinner. I couldn’t resist going up there at 6 p.m. to sample a small bowl whilst I left Garry to entertain our friends. It was delicious but I only had a sample as didn’t want to spoil dinner.

After dinner we went to see the Headliners Magic Moments show. By far the best entertainment yet. The theatre was packed out.

I had started feeling a bit sniffly during the show. We are some of the very few who wear masks in the theatre and I was glad to get out into the open air on our balcony.

Wednesday 15 June 2022 - Lisbon

I woke at 2 am coughing, sneezing and a screaming headache. I took some paracetamol and dozed but at 04:30 I was worse. We had taken lateral flow tests with us and mine immediately showed positive. Thankfully Garry’s was negative. We knew the drill from passengers on the Aurora cruise so got the cabin virtually packed up then phoned the medical centre.
They confirmed they were very busy but would get a swab nurse up to us as soon as possible but to isolate and stay in the cabin.

The PCR test confirmed my positive result and Garry’s negative one. Our friends were also swabbed and negative.
Garry was given the option of staying in our cabin as he was negative but decided against it. I just hope he made the right decision and doesn’t catch it.

We were moved before lunch to a D deck superior balcony which is a bigger cabin but smaller balcony with no shade and completely overlooked. I would book one of these for a cold cruise but not for a summer hot weather cruise.

I now understand why Covid is so infectious as by lunch time I felt completely normal and could have put the earlier symptoms down to having too much drink. If I had woke up at 4 am feeling like I did at 1 p.m. I would never have done a test but would still have been positive so spreading the virus around.

The disappointment is missing our final port of Lisbon where we had planned a visit to Cascais and freshly bbq d sardines for lunch. We were booked on the following 7 night cruise which called at Porto, and Guernsey and has now been cancelled but we will have fcc to put towards another cruise.

On the plus side so far we have had lunch delivered and our evening meal has been ordered. Room service can’t do enough for us despite being very busy. My sense of taste and smell is not diminished and I enjoyed the Rosé wine with lunch.

Such a shame that you’ve had to finish your cruises early and hope you feel better soon. If you used CPS you may need to as the bureau of your change of plan to ensure your car is available for you when you reach Soton.

Today's report from Sue and Garry

Thursday 16 June 2022 1 st sea day to Southampton

Not much to report in isolation. . Garry did another test this morning and is still negative. A nice sunny morning and a special breakfast which has been named Breakfeast as it could have lasted all day. My sense of taste and smell has not altered which would actually have been a bonus for my waistline.

The retail shop telephoned the cabin yesterday evening after I had requested a call to spend up our remaining obc. Great service and the perfume was delivered this morning.

A letter arrived advising our disembarkation time would be after all the fit and well passengers had left which they anticipated would be around 10 a.m. we were thinking it would be much later than that.

The newspapers were delivered but no crosswords or sudoku which usually keeps me occupied for half an hour or so.

We lost the sun around 1 pm but as lunch arrived at 1:30, timed so well as the Captain changed course to enter the BOB and we ate lunch in the sun with a couple of glasses of Rosé wine very civilised whilst isolated.

During the afternoon we had a call from Elouise on reception enquiring about our disembarkation arrangements. They are arranging a taxi to collect us from the port and to take us to the hotel where our car is parked. Great service and although no one wants to catch Covid on holiday the way we have been looked after and communicated with has been faultless.

Tonight is the final formal and I am considering dressing for the occasion as I have a formal dress unworn. 🤣
