Regal Princess Ship review.

Post by Happydays »

This is my review for Regal Princess sailing from New York.

Embarkation/Disembarking
When we arrived at the port for embarking the only way I could describe it was total chaos! After finding a porter we entered the terminal and it was very, very busy each man for them selves. Luckily we were "elite" but that doesn't take effect until after security which they do first. We joined our first queue, after scanning the hand luggage we were sent to a second queue and had our two bottles of wine inspected, tops were checked to make sure they hadn't been opened and other alcohol substituted (felt like a naughty child) then we turned round and got the full effect of the queue for boarding whew! I managed to spy someone handing out the leaflets that you have to declare that you haven't been unwell (the usual one) got one and asked about "elite" and was directed to a much shorter "line" so in all it took approx 35-45 minutes to get on board. Spoke to people on board later in the cruise and it had taken them nearly 2 hours  The Safety drill was before sailing and they scanned all passenger cards to make sure they attended.
Disembarking was much easier we choose our time (9.30am) and after leaving the cabin at 8am we went for breakfast then to the Elite lounge to wait for our time, it was spot on exactly on time. While waiting you could help yourself to muffins, croissants, rolls etc with tea, coffee and water there was also waiters coming round with tea etc. When we disembarked we walked out and there were lots of taxi's and black cabs for getting into the city.Cost was $51+tip.

Cabin
We had an inside cabin on Lido deck (we choose it) First impression was that it was bigger. What gave that effect was that the flat screen TV was on the wall instead of on a unit (like Azura) so no bumping your head well done! The en-suite was the usual size, looked nice and bright but had the dreaded shower curtain. The towels were awful tiny, flimsy and NOT sparkling white. We had a few extras in the en-suite and the free mini bar which was welcome. The cabin steward done her job was pleasant enough when we seen her. Can't ask for more.

Food
We were disappointed with the food and felt the only time we had something hot was when we had a burger on deck as it was cooked to order (thank goodness). We had chosen freedom dining and it did NOT work efficiently. The first night was OK we got a table within a reasonable time. The next night was the first formal night and we thought we'd go early as we wanted to see the champagne waterfall but plenty of others must have had the same idea. They don't use the buzzer system and only had a clipboard with a diagram of the restaurant! we had to wait 35-40 minutes for a table we said we'd share but that didn't make any difference. The next day there was a note saying you could prebook (before 10.30) a time for a table which defeats being freedom dinning.

Entertainment
This was obviously aimed at the American passengers which was fair enough as they were in the majority (as we expected) We went to the theatre to see a singer he was OK sang John Denver/Neil Diamond type songs we didn't go to his second show. The theatre company was average I thought they might have been better with being on a new ship. The other time we went it was a comedian, we stayed at the back in case we didn't like him just as well as "jokes" were about the up coming election and very in house we didn't know what he was talking about so we left early. To be fair the Americans thought he was very funny. In the atrium there was usually a band or pianist/singer in one of the bars and there was an acrobatic duo who were very good.

Dress code/Loyalty event
There were two formal evenings and the rest smart casual. My husband didn't take his black tie (after seeing the TV program) I took a cocktail dress (wore it twice!) My Husband had black trousers & Jacket with a shirt and tie we thought if that wasn't acceptable we would go to the buffet (we cut down on Luggage because we were flying) I would estimate that 50% were of the same kind of dress and the rest were VERY casual I have never seen so many shorts & flip flops worn on a cruise in the evenings quite disappointing. There was only one time (7.15pm) for the loyalty event seemingly there were only about 240 British passengers and I think they were all elite! for the size of the ship there were not many attending the event.

Overview
We thought the ship was lovely the decor was a bit more blingy than P&O not necessarily better or worse just different. As known it's a big ship but we liked it. On board there was plenty of space didn't feel to big until it was time to disembark when in port. There seemed to be a lot a spaces not used by the passengers in the evening, The sushi bar in the atrium was always practically empty and the bars were not busy that was probably down to the prices $20.70+tip for two small glasses of house wine, two lagers were $16.10+15% tip. The one place that was always very busy was the casino. On the second formal evening there was a balloon drop in the atrium which was very nice it was the busiest we'd seen the bars etc not that many were drinking I think perhaps if sailing from Southampton it would have been a different experience but for us it was disappointing. I had been looking forward to it as it was 8 years since sailing with Princess and of course it was a new ship but due to the experience we had (as I said in my previous report) we have cancelled the cruise we had booked for April and have now booked three with P&O  They are not perfect but I LIKE them

Our friends did the Regal Princess from Southampton to New York ( I think the cruise before yours) and felt the same as you about the ship and the atmosphere on board. They still prefer PO, However, they enjoyed the water fountain display at night on one of the higher decks and they felt the entertainment officer/cruise director was an excellent comedian, better than some of the acts.

We have only done a couple of Princess cruises and enjoyed them but, like you, we still prefer P&O.

Thanks for the review.

Cheers for the review.

We've never travelled with Princess but heard that they were pretty good, but expensive.
Empty vessels .. and all that
