Cunard Changing Dress Codes

Reading posts elsewhere, it looks like Cunard are changing their dress codes, or at least their description of them.

When I checked my VP for an April cruise on Queen Victoria it shows the usual dress codes (ie formal and informal). However, we also have a Cunard cruise booked in October, and that is showing "Gala Night" and "Smart". Anyone have any idea what Gala Night means?

Gala Night is normally the Captain's night where all the stops are pulled out, a grand feast with fine wines etc ... P&O used to sell plates with the menus printed on them to commemorate such occasions.

Formal attire would be my expectation.

Who knows? Is the informal the first night?

Yes, the first night but jacket required - as usual.

Informal used to be the old ‘lounge’ suit & tie but really don’t know what the current criterion would be.

A plain pastel coloured sports jacket with a matching long sleeved shirt but no tie required would be my expectation.

Yes I think it changed to "jacket required" but no tie needed. So Moby would be perfectly dressed. But with the passing of time, who knows?

Sometimes they change the actual requirement, sometimes, rather pointlessly, just the name.

When we last went on Princess I thought their description of smart casual as "what you might wear to a nice resturant at home" was pretty clear.

However some passengers interpreted it as "what you might wear to clean a nice toilet" or "to dig a nice garden" and one man wore denim dungarees all week. We clearly eat in different restaurants!
