Luxury Cruises - Boom to Bust

#1

Post by david63 »

Did anyone else see that program on Channel 4 last night?

It was one of the most informative cruise ship programs that I have seen. Many facts and figures about the cruise industry in both the good times and Covid times.

Well worth a watch on catch up (or if it is repeated)

Yes, concentrating mainly on the commercial aspect of the cruise ships and the economics for the operators rather than the passengers, it is definitely worth a watch.

We watched it, and for those traditional small ship cruisers it seems clear that they will have to pay higher prices for this privilege in future. The future of cheap affordable cruising is clearly destined to be on very large resort style ships.

I thought it interesting, particularly the profit ratios.
They said big ships like Indy can run at 30% capacity and break even.
That’s why virtually the entire industry is moving towards the very large ships
70% of turnover from ticket sales and 30% from on board spend.
There are cruises at the moment with no ports.
Now I see why.
Totally captive audience.
Empty vessels .. and all that

That leaves everybody with a very easy decision either go with the cheap and cheerful and over crowded or if the smaller boats are over priced beyond what we think are reasonably priced cruises don't forget we will be able to change to flying or our choice change to going on holidays in hotels in this country but not the big ones
