New on board app -- My Holiday

Post by towny44 »

A new onboard app is being launched by P&O, probably wont be to everyone's taste, but I like the restaurant reservation feature, saves queuing to pick up a pager, leaving you more time to relax in the bar.

It doesn't appear to go as far as being able to reserve a table on Freedom dining for a specific time.

Now if it was to give an approximate time that a table, of a specific size, was to be available then that, for me, would make Freedom dining more appealing

I am not sure that under the current protocols you are allowed to eat with people not linked to your reservation, so that option wont exist.

I like the sound of this! Most cruise companies have an app these days

Nice to be able to view your onboard account again with this app so you can keep an eye on your spending. I always thought it was a bad move when they done away with this feature via the cabin tv.

Bad move for the passenger, good move for the cruise lines ... sometimes it is better that the customer does not know how much they have spent.

On our very first cruise (Carnival) we were delayed from leaving the ship for 2 hours because one passenger could not afford to pay their bill and decided to hide somewhere on the ship in the hope they could sneak off.

We all have a budget Ken and I like to just keep an eye on it when on board, mainly to make sure I’m not paying for something I haven’t had.

I am similar, I like to keep an eye on my account, but in my case it is to make sure the boss isn't going berserk at the tat stalls.

We tend not to budget on holidays but I used to check it daily in case we were charged for something we didn't purchase ... two bottles of Bacardi in one instance on Azura and it took them 3 days to resolve it in my favour.

Usually, about half way through the holiday, I’d take all of the receipts out of the draw, lay them out on the bed and add them up on the calculator on my phone.
It’s usually lower than expected which made the second week even better.
The app is certainly something I’d use.
Empty vessels .. and all that

Sadly not, I simply insisted that they showed me a signed receipt for the booze

I believe that you can, although I don't see where you can access it, but you cannot activate until you are on board which means that you cannot take advantage of it.

Also it is not an app in the true sense but a link to some web pages.

I believe it is a webpage only available when you are logged onto the ships wifi, via its intranet.

I assume that is a free service John.

Yes it is. There are a few free pages you can hit from the app ... wish they would throw in a link to a news channel

Thanks Ken.

My wallet was quivering there for a minute thinking I'd have to fork out for P&O's extortionate Wi-Fi.

Yea, wifi is such an important part of life to many people. Usually in port it is easy enough to find wifi (even if it costs a couple of bottles), it would be nice if somehow the ship could link to a port wifi to even offer basic wifi for free onboard during port days, and then you only had to buy it when at sea.

On the plus side there are advantages to disconnecting from everyday ... in my case that temptation to hit the work email button can be strong ... but I managed not to do it once this trip ... in fact I barely used the internet at all, barring a few WhatsApps to friends and family.

Yes, we normally hook up to the net while having a coffee or beer when ashore.

We usually put the phones in the safe and I’ll check messages etc every couple of days.
We don’t walk about the ship with phones but will obviously take it ashore.
If you can check things from the comfort of your balcony, what’s not to like.

That is pretty much what we would do ... a few beers and a bit of free internet. What is this 'coffee' thing you talk about? ;)

I think Stephen was kidding you about the "C" word he'll be having the beer or perhaps a small red wine ;)
I've been served a Morgans spiced rum by my husband and it would be rude to refuse it :) hic
