We are inviting Donny Rovers to our place to celebrate our promotion to the Prem in May.

I love the first part of the season when all your hopes have been rekindled that THIS is going to be the season when wonderful things will happen, the new players will all turn out to be geniuses and you will take the division by storm. By Christmas realism starts setting in - or in Mob's case it could be by the end of August!!!

Good luck to everybody in the new season.

That's some goal PTE. For a while Frank Sinclair was one of our top scoreres. Alas they were all own goals. He was lethal in front of our goal.

If you want to see a couple of amazing goals take a look at these, especially the second one

You're quite right PTE, it was a bit special wasn't it but it didn't get a mention. You are quite right about Rooney, he scored with a volley (good goal) but it was hailed as goal of the season immediately. The fact is you can see some of the lads from the lower divisions do that week in, week out.

I scored one like that once but it was more of a hoof towards goal than technical brilliance. Centre backs are not renowned for elegance.

English football should be played by English players....We will never do anything at International level because there are too many foreigners playing over here taking the place of a homegrown player....A few I can except, they can enhance the game.....But a whole team...no.

A number of smaller clubs survive because they scout talented young players and nurture them and develop their skills..They then sell them on to bigger richer clubs..The Premier League want to stop that, only paying a nominal capped amount for young talent...Small clubs invest a lot of money in their Academies and the Premier League, that generates millions, want those players on the cheap.

PTE

I thought there were rules for this made by dare I say it by FIFA as I remember reading sometime ago I must admit that teams as part of FIFA must have a certain number of players that come from their own country or was I dreaming. I like you think that at international level we are hopeless due to a lack of choice for our national teams.

I haven't been through the whole thread but are there any women making comments on this thread?

I follow Arsenal only because that's where I grew up but in a household where my two sisters both supported and still do no matter where they are in the world opposing teams one is Arsenal the other Tottenham. Growing up and sharing with these two a bedroom was a bit tense at times.

I don't watch it as much as I used to I got rather bored with it but I do follow other sports. Incidentally my husband dislikes sport.

Hi melsea...It's great that you are joining in with the football thread..You would not believe how many ladies we get down at the Palace and every one of them very, very welcome....Shame about you liking Arsenal though..never mind

In the Premier League the restrictions on a clubs squad is......Squads of 25 must include eight 'home-grown' players.....

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 858634.stm

I don't think there are any restrictions on Football League clubs but will try and confirm that....

It's not enough in my opinion.

Morning Melsea!

Yes there are other women on this site.

I support Aldershot - bit shakey at present as were supposed to be playing in Conference Premier next season but only have half a dozen players on our books at present and a forthcoming meeting on July 1 called by Administrators! Still I live in hope.

My husband's not too keen on football - I think he enjoys his peace and quiet on Saturdays during the season - so he's keeping his fingers crossed that Aldershot stay in existence too!
