That's not the point. People keep telling me he may be nuts but he seems a nice bloke. Not to me he doesn't. Gives me the creeps.

The most despicable human being in British Politics. A man who stood shoulder to shoulder with the IRA celebrating the killing of British Troops in Holland, Joined a gathering of 200 IRA Sympathisers to commememorate the lives of IRA killers killed by the SAS. This person should never be given the chance to govern our country. He and Mcdonnell who is also a sympathiser should be held to account .

I'm none too impressed that I may have to sell the family pile to help pay for my ( add/or Mobietta's ) medical care when said service is provided in the comfort of our home rather than in a care home ... oh no !!!qbman1 wrote: 19 May 2017, 10:52The strange thing this time is that some of the stuff in yesterday's manifesto could even deter some people from voting Conservative who would otherwise have done so. I always thought the idea of it was to win votes and then go back on the promises once in power.
Plus ... there should deffo be a ' cap ' relating to medical type charges, imo.

Depends where you live and what your house is worth. Under the old rules if we went into care we'd have to sell our house to pay for it. Under the new, since our house is worth only about £220,000 and we own half each we can keep most of it.

They did say that the property would not have to be sold to fund the care during your lifetime so I am not sure how that will work ?Manoverboard wrote: 19 May 2017, 16:25I'm none too impressed that I may have to sell the family pile to help pay for my ( add/or Mobietta's ) medical care when said service is provided in the comfort of our home rather than in a care home ... oh no !!!qbman1 wrote: 19 May 2017, 10:52The strange thing this time is that some of the stuff in yesterday's manifesto could even deter some people from voting Conservative who would otherwise have done so. Have you considered the Conservatives know things are going a bit wrong and now would be a good time to lose an election?Manoverboard wrote: 19 May 2017, 16:25I'm none too impressed that I may have to sell the family pile to help pay for my ( add/or Mobietta's ) medical care when said service is provided in the comfort of our home rather than in a care home ... oh no !!!qbman1 wrote: 19 May 2017, 10:52The strange thing this time is that some of the stuff in yesterday's manifesto could even deter some people from voting Conservative who would otherwise have done so. Let others clear up the mess and then come back in five years pretending it wasn't their fault.

It gets sold after one's ( one + one if a couple ) departure from this World and one's estate for the surviving spouse repays the local Council for the loan I / we were forced to take out ... plus interest and Admin charges of course.qbman1 wrote: 19 May 2017, 16:28They did say that the property would not have to be sold to fund the care during your lifetime so I am not sure how that will work ?Manoverboard wrote: 19 May 2017, 16:25I'm none too impressed that I may have to sell the family pile to help pay for my ( add/or Mobietta's ) medical care when said service is provided in the comfort of our home rather than in a care home ... oh no !!!qbman1 wrote: 19 May 2017, 10:52The strange thing this time is that some of the stuff in yesterday's manifesto could even deter some people from voting Conservative who would otherwise have done so. Maldon towers may have to go in favour of a log cabin. Still, on the up side we can blow all the money on more holidays and cruises before the powers that be get their sticky fingers on itMervyn and Trish wrote: 19 May 2017, 16:27Depends where you live and what your house is worth. Having returned to my senses I immediately realised that my future would be better entrusted to those who know that their duty is to serve the Queen rather than Stalin's memory and that the Conservative Party Ministers are generally aware of their responsibility to serve the people of this wonderful Country of ours rather than the ' Unite ' Trade Union leadership.
Having experienced the debacle of the 60s and 70s first hand I have no wish to do so again.

If you need continuing medical nursing care then that is fully funded anyway - unless they move the goalposts.Manoverboard wrote: 19 May 2017, 16:25here should deffo be a ' cap ' relating to medical type charges

Not if you are treated in your own home .... is my understanding ?david63 wrote: 19 May 2017, 17:36If you need continuing medical nursing care then that is fully funded anyway - unless they move the goalposts.Manoverboard wrote: 19 May 2017, 16:25here should deffo be a ' cap ' relating to medical type charges
ps ... Yes, it is my understanding that they have moved the goalposts so that they are in line with the rules as per those that apply in a care home.

Re: General Election - 8th June
But "continuing" nursing care would not be in your own home.

Re: General Election - 8th June
It most certainly used to be - a friend received it fairly recently for her husband at home for a couple of years. Nightmare to get it, though, but then it's very difficult to get even in a nursing home.

And I think that's part of the point. At the moment home care is theoretically free. But actually hard to get at all. If the better off have to pay towards it then there might be enough to go round

Re: General Election - 8th June
There's a massive difference between 'home care' and 'continuing care'. The latter is only available for those who need actual nursing 24 hours a day and is state funded regardless of wealth - that is set to continue (quite rightly) as far as I know. It is extremely difficult to get, and always has been. The former is not currently free - it is currently chargeable, but means tested; the value of your property is not included in the means testing. The new plan is that the property will be taken into account.Mervyn and Trish wrote: 19 May 2017, 19:45And I think that's part of the point. At the moment home care is theoretically free. I think I've got that right!

Re: General Election - 8th June
I think that is correct ... the Manifesto also raises the 23K limit as was to £100,000.

Which is why it's good news for us. We won't be paying for it whatever kind of care it is after the first £20k

They ( the Council ) also take into account your State plus Company pension(s) which after deduction of reasonable household expenses ' could ' result in you having to make a contribution ... thanks, in advanceMervyn and Trish wrote: 20 May 2017, 18:22Which is why it's good news for us. ps ... unless you depart this world together one of you will be paying £120,000, not £20,000 .... just saying.

Re: General Election - 8th June
The idea clearly is to firstly sever the tenancy in how you own your property.
90% are in what's called beneficial joint tenants. That implies that you both own 100% share of the value, jointly.
Change that to tenants in common so you each own an equal share.
So, in theory, only your assets can pay for your care.
Example - house worth £200k - each tenant in common owns £100K share - nothing to pay.
You can also bequeath your share 50% to your children, to be held in trust until the second death.
Example, both do mirror Wills each leaving their share to their son, with right of occupation to the survivor, for life.
Should assets need to take into account for care, the person only legally owns half of their house with the other half owned by the Trust, so only that can be counted.
