Hi Frank,

You don’t happen to work at Gregg’s Bakery do you?[/quote]

Hi keith, Greggs is a dirty word around here. They are targetting a fabulous local bakery chain called Bennetts, by opening branches next door when they can, but their stuff is nowhere near as good as Bennetts. A Bennetts Danish is to die for. We bake all our own bread in the oven, and our own cakes, but when we are trying to slim or keep weight down we have to stop the cake making.

The only way to do it is to keep a check on calorie intake, get exercise, and dont cheat. :lolno: But enough of my sanctimonious clap trap. ;)

Which is why you should weigh yourself in only your birthday suit DK :o

Just out of interest are you 'pinch an inchers' allowing yourself 'treats'

Pre Xmas I successfully lost weight by dieting Monday to Friday and eating normally at weekends ( albeit in moderation ) so never really felt as if I was denying myself anything.

Thank you Keith
I would blame you for not losing any weight because of all the chocs you send but I haven't received them yet. I'm sure it's because the boat has been cancelled so many times because of the weather. ;)

Keith - do you think Dark Knight will give you a break when he is on holiday in a week's time. If so, you only have to stay strong for a little longer.

Hi Frank,

Along the same lines, my best mate was the owner of a thriving Newsagents business in a village next to ours. He had built it up from nothing only then to have Tesco’s come along and plonk one of their “One Stop” stores right next door. They managed to survive, mostly due to the locals staying loyal but when Tesco’s then went and bought out the local post office and incorporated it into their “One Stop” store, the writing was on the wall.

It’s not easy for any independent retailer to survive the might of the big five and sadly most of us are party to their demise because most of us do our shopping with them.

Hi Jo,

The only treat I’ve allowed myself thus far is a few slices of Burrrry Black pudding, Oh and one rich tea biscuit.

I was listening to Radio live 5 this morning and a campaign has been launched “today” to try and make people aware of how much sugar is added to our foods...for example, who would have thought there are 5 teaspoons of sugar in a standard carton of low fat yogurt, 4 in a can of tomato soup?
I think I’ll be giving the labels closer scrutiny in the future...

Regards

Keith

Obviously this thread was set out with the intention of helping each other eat sensibly, with a stick of celery being the prize for the 'winner' being the best 'loser'.

Listening to discussions today on the subject of hidden sugar it is quite scary of the amount in products you would least expect it.

My OH has Crohn's disease and diverticulitis and following surgery he needs to watch what he eats . He has a has a very sweet tooth but has cut back on the amount of biscuits he eats and has cut back to 1 spoonful of sugar in his coffee. I cannot get him off his crunchy nut cereal but I think it is slightly better than the sugar he puts on to sugar puffs. He has fish several times a week and is steaming it so hopefully he will learn to eat healthier.

I add sugar to all green veg to keep the colour, does anyone else do this.

I've never heard of that being done before. We rarely, if ever, even add salt to food whilst cooking and never to the finished meal.

Anyhows, I saw the doctor this morning, and she said my blood pressure is borderline high (140/90) and my cholesterol is borderline high (can't remember the figure).

She gave me a list of foods:

Foods that may be eaten regularly (little or no fat and/or "healthy" foods)

Cereal foods - wholemeal flour and bread, porridge oats, high-fibre breakfast cereals, wholegrain rice and pasta

Fruit, veg and nuts - all fresh and frozen vegetables and fruit, dried beans and lentils, dried fruit, walnuts

Fish - all white fish, oily fish such as herring, mackerel, sardines, pilchards, or salmon (not tinned in oil)

Meat - lean white meat such as chicken and turkey breast (without skin)

Eggs, dairy foods: Skimmed or semi-skimmed mil, cottage or curd cheese, low-fat yohurt, egg whites

Fates and spreads: none

Drinks and soups: tea and coffee, mineral water, fruit juices

Foods to be eaten in moderation

White flour and bread, low-fibre breakfast cereals, white rice and pasta, plain biscuits, plain or fruit scones

Ove chips, avocados, olives, almonds, pecans, hazelnuts

Shellfish

Lean ham, beef, pork, lamb, lean mince, liver, kidney

Edam, Camembert, Parmesan, up to three egg yolks a week

Low fat spreads, margarine high in polyunsaturates, corn oil, sunflower oil, olive oil

Packet soups, alcoholic drinks

Foods to avoid or eat rarely (high in fat and'or "unhealthy" foods)

Croissants, fried bread, most cakes and biscuits, patries, suet pudding

Chips, fried or roast potatoes, fried, creamed, buttered or cheesed vegetables, crisps and potato snacks, coconut, brazils, roasted peanuts

Fish roe, caviar

Visible fat on meat, crackling, sausages, pates, duck, gooes, meat pies/pasties

Whole milk, cream, ice cream, most hard cheeses, chocolate, cream cheese

Butter, dripping and lard, margarine not high in polyunsaturates

Cream soups, milky drinks, sugary drinks

She asked what my alcohol intake is and did not have a problem with half a bottle of wine a weekend (thankfully I omitted to mention it was a jeroboam..)

Exercise and diet should get me back down to healthy levels without resorting to medication.

I've also sent off for an "activity tracker", to help keep a check on what I'm up to - I need to set targets and monitor them.

SS, Glad your results are manageable. Your food 'choices' seem very workable

My 'menus ' are mostly from the forbidden list , with butter and salt being added to most dishes.

I think perhaps it is time for me to be a little bit more cautious.

Good luck with your re arranged food plan

Hi SS,
I was given the same list 5 years ago which I still stick to. Since then I have lost over 4 stone in weight and feel much healthier.

I eat the allowed list during the week and once I have reached my goal allow some other foods into my diet.

On holiday I try to follow a healthy diet but do not worry about it too much. I have found that I no longer crave or enjoy the very sugary fatty deserts although there are exceptions to this, Sindhus spiced chocolate pudding being one.

Alcohol is my main downfall. I only drink at weekend except when on hol and look at this as my treat for being good all week. Still not excessive drinkers but probably still too much to be good for us.

What I do find is that although the weight is generally easy to maintain once on holiday and more relaxed it piles on quickly.

Hello Andrea,

Considering what your OH has gone through and still has to put up with, he sounds to me as if he’s managing his food intake pretty well...give or take the odd cereal bars :)

Cohn’s disease can be a very debilitating condition, one which my late mother suffered with so I know only too well how the symptoms can affect a person’s daily lives. I also know how much diverticulitis can be a pain in the butt because I have this condition also...along with IBS which can at times be very uncomfortable, although I have to say I’ve been able to laugh it off far more easily since I’ve changed my toilet paper

I can’t say I’ve ever heard about putting sugar into your vegetables to keep them green. I have been known to put lemon juice in my spuds to stop them turning black. Just thinking about it, would “splenda” sweeteners be a better option than spoonfuls of sugar?

Regards

Keith

Crohn's is not about eating healthy. it is the inability to extract the vitamins and minerals from food and also the fact it does not stay in your system long enough to break down and provide you with the calorific intake you need
oddly a diet for Crohn's sufferers is not one for losing weight, quite the opposite, it is designed so that you maintain your weight as a minimum and increase your weight as the goal
all Crohn's sufferers lose dramatic amounts of weight , this is usually the first or second symptom used in diagnosis of the disease, and find it hard to maintain or recover the weight loss

Hi Alan,

Pleased to hear there were no unpleasant surprises today and that those of concern can be well managed... with a little tweaking.

I’ve got my own blood pressure monitor which I use on a regular basis, it also saves you having to wait for a blood pressure monitor to become available from your doctors surgery should you need to give 7 day readings to your doctor. 140/90 isn’t going to kill yeah but the lower figure is a little high.

Keep taking the pills Alan you’ll be fine.

Best wishes

Keith
