Have just been watching the Brownlee brothers where Jonny is close to collapse and is helped over the line by his brother Alastair.
Irrespective of the result it was a lovely example of brotherly love and care.

Sorry but I don't agree with that, if he can't make it over the line without being carried he has not finished the race and should be disqualified.
We will be getting dads carrying their kids to win a race on school sports day next, why didn't they let him complete the cycling event on a moped ? he would have made the running event then.
Brotherly love or not it is not in the spirit of sport.

It may not be in the spirit of sport for sport's sake, but it is a superb example of brotherly love and sportsmanship on the part of the brother who helped his struggling sibling.

Re: Ladies Who Chat(and men of course)
There are some things which are more important than the spirit of sport. If it were my brother in the same situation I wouldn't give the spirit of sport a second thought, or worry about disqualification. When you see somebody from your own family in trouble the race suddenly becomes second in priority. Apparently it is within the rules for another competitor to help but not anybody stood on the sidelines.
Anyone remember Paolo di Canio, the hot headed Italian who could have scored a goal but stopped play so the injured goalkeeper could get attention? Should he have been disciplined? For me it is moments like this which restores faith in human nature.
Sorry Raybo, I can't agree with you.

Re: Ladies Who Chat(and men of course)
You hit the nail on the head with Paolo di Campo Foxy he sportingly refused to score so that the injured goalkeeper could get treatment, Johnny Brownlee was helped to get the silver medal in the race and could have won the World Series, the competitor that finished fourth was denied a medal.oldbluefox wrote:There are some things which are more important than the spirit of sport. If it was me I would have stopped to help my brother of course but only to get first aid and I would have denied myself the chance of getting the bronze medal too.
There is nobody more patriotic than me but I think justice was done when the Spaniard crossed the line with enough points to win the World Series.

Having no interest in sport whatsoever I haven't a clue what you are talking about but I do know about brother/sisterly love and I would walk/crawl across hot coals on my hands and knees for my brother and I know he would do the same for me.

I would give up my life for my brothers and sister Jo but I wouldn't help them unsportingly gain a medal.Dancing Queen wrote:Having no interest in sport whatsoever I haven't a clue what you are talking about but I do know about brother/sisterly love and I would walk/crawl across hot coals on my hands and knees for my brother and I know he would do the same for me.

Well if it's within the rules - which it must be or they would have both been disqualified - it's surely not unsporting?
Is it any different in that sense from cycle teams deliberately towing each other in turn in their slipstreams to gain advantage over other competitors?
