The latest financial reports show that Scotland has the weakest economy in the EU, without the financial support of the rest of the UK Scotland would be bankrupt.Jack Staff wrote:I would like to keep my country from splitting up.Mervyn and Trish wrote:Keep flogging the horse Jack.
Much as I disagree with most of what NS says, I don't believe she is stupid enough to think that Scotland could now make it as an independent country, but it does make a good electioneering statement for the remain supporters.

With the current political landscape, sense and economics are immaterial. Otherwise the UK would not be contemplating leaving the E.U.towny44 wrote:The latest financial reports show that Scotland has the weakest economy in the EU, without the financial support of the rest of the UK Scotland would be bankrupt.

Scotland will remain in the E.U. ('Waiting Room' has already been devised). Northern Ireland has to stay in the E.U. as well, due to the Good Friday agreement and the fact that's what they voted for.
It is England that is taking the risk as an independent country, though we may still have Wales for a time.

There's a whole world out there waiting to trade with us. EU countries are not our only customers and providers.

We are leaving the EU. We are not leaving Europe.
Neither, unlike Jack, are we living in Cloud Cuckoo Land. I don't know where you get your information Jack but I'd demand my money back if I were you.

Well I have a TV and a computer, like most people. All the information is there if you look for it.towny44 wrote:Where do you get these wild ideas from Jack.
What would you like me to clarify for you?
You just have to not believe the right wing bile published in the Daily Express and Daily Mail, both of which are getting themselves into trouble over their lies. Unfortunately all that will lead to is an apology in two months time on page nine.

Re: Current Affairs
I voted to be free of EU interfer involvement in our political affairs, to prevent the great unwashed from coming here to milk our over-generous benefits system (especially as we can produce ample such people ourselves without the need to import them), to be able to trade more freely with the rest of the world.
Of course, whether Westminster will actually implement such remains to be seen.
Just to re-emphasise what I have stated very clearly several times before, I am NOT advocating a blanket ban on immigration. If anyone of ANY nationality wants to come here, having been made a job offer, and wishes to contribute to our society, and not retreat into a ghetto, then they are more than welcome.

So what has that got to do with the EU? Guess I am just rather naive, but I thought that was governed by our government which we can elect to change every five years.

Re: Current Affairs
We are required by the EU to allow the free passage of all people. If someone here is unhappy with the judgement made in a British court, he can appeal to the European Court, and that verdict overrules. As part of this political union, our finances are required to help prop up the failing economies of Greece. Sorry, but that money can be better used by relieving the strain on the NHS, by putting policemen back on the beat, by building much needed houses for our own people.
I, like many others, voted to join a commercial union, not the political union it has evolved into.

Re: Current Affairs
I dont think it is fair to say that Jack is "living in cloud cuckoo land" SS. He is putting forward arguments which are just as reasoned from his and many others viewpoints. Also he is spot on about the hysteria spouted by the wail and the express. Except on this forum, we are not a small minority who are going to go away just because we are insultingly dismissed by people like TM. We are as entitled to maintain our views after the referendum as those ( who hitherto have been unable to present a coherent plan for post brexit, ) have maintained theirs. As for TM, snake in the grass springs to mind, or 'run with the fox and hunt with the hounds'.

TM is implementing the will of the people as expressed in a democratic referendum. You may not be a small minority Frank but you are a minority. You lost. TM is doing the job she was mandated to do.
And it was me thst suggested Jack was in CCL for his outrageous list of people he claimed supported Mrs Krankie's desire for independence. He even started with Scottish people when the majority of them voted against her in their own referendum

Re: Current Affairs
You do not lose in a democracy as it is continuous. People change their minds. Even Theresa May can change her mind, she previously professed to being a Remainer. While you may have had to wait 41 years, June 23rd proves my point.Mervyn and Trish wrote:TM is implementing the will of the people as expressed in a democratic referendum. My apologies for not being absolutely crystal clear about my comments on Ms. Sturgeon. Perhaps I should of been more verbose in #224.Mervyn and Trish wrote:And it was me thst suggested Jack was in CCL for his outrageous list of people he claimed supported Mrs Krankie's desire for independence. The call for a second Scottish independence referendum is directly caused by the Brokeit vote. She is determined to keep Scotland in the E.U. and in THAT aim is the list I quoted. But don't take it from me, try a different daily paper than the one you seem to get your "information" from, for example http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/to ... ed-9014641

Re: Current Affairs
I see that Donald, Tusk not Trump, is now saying its hard Brexit or no Brexit if we want to limit freedom of movement. I guess he's not been reading the Bundestag's equivalent to Hansard to realise they are withdrawing state benefits to immigrants, specifically to reduce the numbers.
Ah well like all politicians he is very liberal with his version of the truth and facts.

....................................... and the people who voted to remain are in a greater minority. Where does this idea come from that those who did not vote would have voted to remain? Nobody knows what their intentions would have been. What is the evidence for this assumption?Golden Princess wrote:The people who actually voted for leave are the minority.
Even with the votes of Brits living abroad and the Gibraltar vote which we could safely predict as Remainers there was still not enough belief in the EU to carry the Remainers across the line. Take those special cases out of the equation and the gap gets much bigger.

The woman clearly lives in a world of her own! Although they are all at it - just keep having a vote until you get the result you want !
(although if it meant getting rid of the odious little woman I'd probably vote for them getting independence as well. As it stands it's up to the Scots themselves to either move her and her henchmen out or take independence).
Interestingly this week I visited the House of Commons and heard a story that when the SNP MPs came down to London they tried to take over Dennis Skinner's customary seat where he has sat for years. If true I find their total lack of respect for anybody but themselves a disgrace and would love to know what he said to them!!!

Re: Current Affairs
OBF, I have never made any assumptions as to how any one has voted, or would have voted. Where do you get this assumption from?
Have you made assumptions as to how I voted, if I even voted at all?
I would just like some reassurance that we are now on the most beneficial course. As yet, I have none.

(Plaid Cymru and Green MPs total 4 but I suppose every little helps)

Yes maybe, that is true, especially with regard to the wail. I read The Times. Not before anyone starts, because I amSilver_Shiney wrote:Should have, not should of

a) A snob. or,
b) A pretend academic
but because throughout the referendum campaign it gave a balanced and unhysterical viewpoint, without any 'stories' of how we poor Brits (English) are being ill treated by 'johnny foreigner'. Nor does the Times have endless coverage of the Kardashians, or pathetic excuses to show and I quote here (any female will do) toned body or her tight abs or her ample curves.
As for the Scots, I have some very nice Scots friends. The Scots are a proud race, and I for one don't want them to leave the UK, but I will respect them whatever. They have made some tremendous contributions to our nation over the past 310 years since the Act of Union.

Personally, I'd go for the Tellinggraph if it was tabloid size - I find the sheer size of a broadsheet too unwieldy.
Who are the Kardashians?
The Scots, of whom I am one, are indeed a proud nation, although I fear they can sometimes rub this in others' faces - my father certainly did. As far as independence is concerned, on one level I couldn't care less either way, but on another level I worry that their economy isn't strong enough and, if they were permitted to join the EU, they would become a basketcase financially.
