That's fine, stand by your principles by all means, but do it more discreetly please.

The ITV dispatches documentary was a media story covered by most media outlet and as such has every right to be posted/discussed on this forum…if we have now reached the point where an individual member is targeted with condescending/belittling remarks for airing their views then perhaps my participate on this forum is coming to an end.

I can of course supply members with amply boxes of tissues should this be the case  :)

We have been through this argument many times before so it would be eminently clear there would be no change in opinion. As such it was clear few of us would be in the least bit interested in a programme about tax arrangements involving the Royal Family especially since we were alerted to it under the controversial topic heading "And we don't have to pay any tax... dad." Personally I saw little point in trying to discuss an issue on which you and I strongly disagree.
I am surprised you felt 'targeted with condescending/belittling remarks'. I found your comments condescending and belittling and therefore I will not be apologising for anything I said to you. As they say "If you're going to dish the dirt don't be surprised if you get it back".
I think you ought to respect the fact that others do not share your Republican ideals and may find some of your references to the Royal Family disrespectful bordering on offensive.

It would be a pity if you left the forum since we have all known you for many years and have appreciated your banter and good humour. Maybe just accept this is an argument neither you or I/we are going to agree on and place it out of bounds in the interests of forum harmony.

Hi foxy, I thank you for your endorsement of my banter and good humour, I would like to think I leave a bit of both in most things I post. As you say I have been posting for many years, some twenty years on this and the previous forum… that's if my fading memory serves me right? What I can say with a certain amount of confidence is that in that time I have only once allowed myself to descend to the levels of personal put downs on any member of this forum…other than in jest. I can only think your reference to my condescending remarks is where I made the comment that your comment about Dame Hodge was weak as in its attempt to deflect from what I had posted previously. My comment re: capitulate was tic as donated by the emojis…I apologise if you took that in a condescending and belittling way.

Now let’s get to the nitty gritty…"If you're going to dish the dirt don't be surprised if you get it back".
Are you referring to the flowery description of the freeloading Royal family? If this is the case then this forum is the place to come for dishing the dirt on people who don’t meet with the approval of some forum members (I can supply a comprehensive list if you so wish) so, on that note, I also won’t be apologising for targeting Charlie and Cam in the same manor.

In the same vein there have been many comments where others have made disparaging remarks about people who I don’t believe deserve to be talked about that way, I do however try to keep those comments in the context of personal opinion, even though I have found some of them offensive.

Asking me to put this topic out of bounds for the sake of forum harmony is like asking me not to put a mince pie out for father Christmas. Sorry!

What I do know for sure is that if we do get to meet up you are going to really like me

In the association I belong to we don't discuss religion or politics. That works. My suggestion was to put the Monarchy on a similar agenda bearing in mind the entrenched opinions. It's an argument we have had many times before and don't need which is probably why so few posted on it. Raise the topic if you like but I for one won't be responding.

I would be disappointed if you departed OL, if only because I am stupidly ever optimistic to be the recipient of chocs. However if the issue of the Monarchy were never to be raised again I would be delighted. It's become even more boring than Boris's birthday cake.

Meanwhile in the US........

Does this mean I can have a thread all to myself?... I’ll have steam coming out of your heads every time I put the kettle on.

The reason why no one commented on my thread was that you had to sign up to watch the documentary, if having missed/avoided it on Saturday....it was an education in how they spend/rake in our money. I did think Charlies Buckingham palace designed Fire Station folly with Royal balcony looked impressive.... shame the rest of the country can't afford one. :)

See it as an investment opportunity…you just need to find a Nuclear Bunker manufacture and you’ll be laughing all the way to the bank…once the smoke has cleared that is.

I know you think he struggles to make ends meet, but I do think the money he gets from charging £££millions in rent from such public services as the NHS, Schools and the Armed Forces, not to mention privately run mining companies, which incidentally are causing irreversible ecological damage to land passed down through his ancestors medieval practises, I therefore will decline your suggestion having decided to donate extra to this year’s poppy appeal, which I’m sure you will agree is a far more worthwhile cause.

Gosh! I didn’t expect it to hurt that much….but then I struggle to believe that anyone who has watched this link can honestly say there isn’t questions to be asked about how the Royal Institution conduct their affairs.

Surely OL you must realise that these sort of programmes are made by someone who has probably even stronger anti monarchist views than even you, and they will of course have made sure that they slant the programme to support those views.
Equally someone who strongly supports the Monarchy would slant their interpretation of the facts to show completely the opposite view.

The media are constantly telling us that the "stinking Rich" get away with paying minimal taxes, so I guess you can't complain that our rich Monarchy do the same! :D ;)

Indeed John, the “stinking rich” do pay minimal taxes… in proportion to income and wealth than that of the average working person.

We do live in a screwed-up country where we have allowed the top 60 or so families to have more wealth than half the population of this country. It is also a disgrace that successive governments have allowed one family to avoid paying tax all together… other than personal tax on what they choose to declare… without scrutiny.

This country needs to wake up to the disparities in wealth and look at ways of narrowing this gap for the benefit of the country as a whole. The suggestion that a wealth tax should be introduced has long been vaunted as a way of doing this, and to my mind it is the only way this country could raise the amount of money (billions) that is needed to get this country back on its feet. How they go about this is perhaps the most difficult question but getting past the first hurdle of wanting to do it would be a step in the right direction imo.
