Cheltenham certainly creates stories that touch the heart of racing enthusiasts, none morse so than Marine National winning the Champion Chase. Some of you will have heard the devastating news that one of Irelands most upcoming jockey’s Micheal O’Sullivan tragically died in a fall just a few weeks ago…he would have been riding this horse had fate not played this cruel blow.
I would like to think he wrote this script for those he left behind.

RIP

Pompy, some very dodgy starts today, coupled with one or two who didn’t know which way they were going. Awful!

Today’s results

!.20 The Yellow Clay 2nd…Sixmilebridge 9th
2.40 Minella Missile 16th
3.20 Roi Mage 7th
4.40 So Scottish 13th

Total stake £35 Total return £0

Day Three

Gavin Cromwell’s horses continue to run well so Sixandahalf 1.20 looks to be the one to be on.

As with the first race I will be backing another Cromwell horse in The Other Mossie 2.00

Bringing up the treble for Jockey and trainer could be Will the Wise 2.40

Jagwar 4.40 looks to be a rising star.

Daily Present 5.20 runs in the amateur jockey race and has an experienced PTP jockey onboard.

Tomorrow’s bets

1.20 Sixandahalf £5 win
2.The Other Mossie £5 win
2.0 Will the Wise £5 win
4.40 Jagwar £5 win
5.20 Daily Present £5 win

I hope Keefy's not passing on his tipster secrets to you Portsmouth. You know what he's like!!
No tipping secrets.....just sticking a pin amongst the runners and hoping for the best

Total spent = £14 but had a place with Impose Toi so maybe I'll have wasted about £10 in bad bets.

Onelife was unlucky in the first race as Yellow Clay was so close to winning but just beaten by The New Lion by 3/4 length
I did say yesterday that " The New Lion would have been my bet if the odds were better "

Can't see Galvin doing that well in the Grand National but he will stay.

my choices weren't that good which is why I usually only bet on the big classics....choosing a good priced outsider rather than a favourite.
Have to say though I can't see anything beating Galopin des Champs in the Gold cup

Hi Pompy, it was reported that Galvin was taken away in the horse ambulance after the race, that, being said, the horse walked in without assistance so things may not be as bad as first thought. It was also commented on that the horse was sweating badly at the start which may explain its poor running?

But yes, I agree, not the best build up you would want for a run in the National…looks a doubtful runner after that.

You make a good point about trying to get value for what in betting terms are our small bets…there will be some individuals who have lost £££thousands backing the favourites over Cheltenham. like you, I tend to look for a bit of value in the price rather than bet short odds for small return. For me it’s a hobby not an addiction where I think I can beat the odds.
Its nice when it happens, but even nicer when you have a short memory about the losers.

Keep smiling, Keep betting, Enjoy!

Thanks for the info about Galvin.....now lets get on to my choices for tomorrow for the race times you have chosen
Again I can't say if I'll make it to a betting shop in time...I was lucky today ( actually not so lucky because I lost £10 :o  )

In the 1:20...... Paul Nicholls horse Jubilee Alpha 11/1 is my choice £1 e/way
In the 2:00......Es Perfecto at 33/1 horse is 10 years old yet the oldest horse to win was 9.....but my bet is £2 e/way
Also an extra bet of £2 win on Caldwell Flyer another Paul Nichols horse

For those who are curious about why the extra bet read on......for those who are bored already  move to the next post
It seems that all winners from 2015 have had at least 2 wins in their last 4 races and only four horses match this criteria
Springwell Bay ( the favourite )
Caldwell Potter my extra gamble
Es Perfecto my e/way choice but age is against it winning according to statistics
The Other Mozzie the choice by Onelife

In the 2:40....I've gone for Win Some Lose Some because I like the name ;) £1 win
also Guard the Moon £2 e/way .....last race he didn't seem to like the soft ground and didn't travel well ..33/1
4:40 race I've gone for last years winner Shakem Up'arry £1 e/way.....25/1
5:20 race I've gone for Sine Nomine 25/1 ......last 2 races his rider Mr john davidson was unseated and fell.....lets hope he does better.

As you can see...if I do bet it's more about fun rather than spending too much money....I would never bet something like £100 on a horse :o :o

Hi Pompy, I don’t know if you know this but your selection Caldwell Potter is the most expensive NH horse ever purchased… just a bit short of £650,000

You won’t be the only one hoping it wins because it hasn’t as yet lived up to its price tag.

I’m having second thoughts about The Other Mozzie as I think it’s a bit short of class for a race of this type…. I shall stick with it but the more likely winner will probably come from the top three in the weights.

Good luck if you decide to have a bet…. who knows you might be able to buy David a pair or oars for his forthcoming cruise

No, I had no idea about the price of Caldwell Potter
I was having second thoughts about Galvin and wish I had changed horses....If you still have time to change The Other Mozzie maybe you should follow your instinct....just keep a £1 each way and put the other £3 on something else ????

Hi Pompy, I haven’t as yet made my donation to Betfred but I’d be sick if I switched horses and the Mozzie strolled in.

Not advice but a suggestion....if Mozzie still wins ( 50/1 ) then you should get at least £50 back enough to deflect the 1st/2nd days losses

I'll bet you a nice box of chocolates he won't

ps The Other Mozzie is now only 33/1 at Bet Fred most other places he is 50/1 and William Hill = 66/1
I'm now having slight doubts about Caldwell Potter....will only put £1 win on it

The topic brings back memories of my mother and her love of horse racing. Her stepfather was a bookies runner in the days before betting was legal and as a small child I went with my grandmother on a bus to “visit” her friend and in her bag was the “clock” and the takings. Of course I had no idea what it was all about. Cheltenham was one of her favourite meets - she knew the trainers/jockeys and the form of the horses - didn’t bet in her later years but so enjoyed watching it on the tv. I remember her coming to lunch one Sunday and insisting we watch the Prix de L’arc de Triomphe at Longchamp - lovely memories!

No ....not going to make the bookies today. Also thought for a minute that my other choice Es Perfecto was going to get a place...just couldn't hold on though. Sad news about Springwell Bay. The way Caldwell Potter led from the front was impressive . Also I was pleased a horse priced at 125/1 came second and 3rd place was 66/1. Just shows if you get the right one, outsiders can bring you a bit of cash.

You were unlucky with Sixandahalf just beaten 1/2 length in the run up

Another cracking days racing with the phenomenal Racheal Blackmore riding two winners. In my book this young lady can and does stand head and shoulders alongside the best of the male jockeys.
Well, it’s the big one tomorrow (Gold Cup) and like Pompy I think and hope Galloping Des Champs can for fill his destiny by winning this most prestigious race for the third time. I won’t be having a bet in the race as backing anything else in the race would seem like a betrayal.

Todays results

1.20 Sixandahalf… 2nd
2.0 Springwell Bay… Fell-Fatal :( …The Other Mossie 7th ( Pompey had the winner Caldwell Potter 7/1)
2.40 Will the Wise… 6th
4.40 Jagwar 1st…3/1 took 4/1
5.20 Daily Present 1st 12/1 took 28/1

Total stake £26 Total return £170

I’m quite confident that I’m going to get some good runs for my money tomorrow so here goes…

1.20 Hello neighbour £5 win
2.0 Kargese £5 win
3.20 Wingman £5 win
4.20 Its on the line £5 win
5.20 Wadhooh £5 win

Pompy…please don’t deprive Stephen his box of Chocolates, I have a few OOD boxes to get rid of.
 :D

David, I’m sending you £5 for some patches just in case you spring a leak.
