I have used the F.O.C Avast AV for years and found it very good and really does look after your PC and I use it in conjunction with two other free apps Spybot and CCleaner that do different jobs, but I do not bank online.   8-)

I used CCleaner on my Windows 7 machine and it really messed it up. I had to use System Restore to get back to normal. It's strange really as I had used it before without any problems on XP.
I now use Microsoft Essentials (free) and Malwarebytes (free) to keep my machine safe. I also defrag with Ultimate Defrag or Defraggler to keep it running smoothly.

You have to be very careful with the settings of CCleaner otherwise it can be too aggressive and do things that you do not want it to do.

It seems quite a few people have had problems on 64 bit machines. I may give it another try and omit the registry cleaner. Any other bits I should avoid?

Yes OBF be careful what you disable in startup. By the way I have a 64 bit PC why should you have problems with it? :geek:   8-)

I've no idea what went wrong but I tried it twice with equally disastrous results. In XP I always just allowed it to analyze and then clean. Clearly I need to be more selective in my settings.
