Hi Romig - that might be different - that's a public forum. You're right.

I also belong to a BCAL Reunited site on Facebook, but that's a private one.

Yes just checked. The BCAL page on FB is members only. The P&O one is public of course because presumably it's advertising for P&O

Hello there. I've just joined the forum and (not being very good with technical stuff) am still finding my way around. I missed the P&O forum and always preferred it to using their facebook site. Thank you so much for setting up this forum. It's great! Best Wishes.

Re: Facebook is not for me!
I have fb privacy settings family and friends but very rarely post on it, but at least it keeps me in touch with them, when they post their photo,s, like this morning when our son has posted a photo of their german shepherd dog enjoying the snow.
I also belong to a couple of cruise fb pages, but again very rarely post on them, dont like the layout of them and certainly they are not a patch on forums such as this, alright for posting the odd message quickly, then its slides down the page in no time. As people know I am into photo's, but every single thread on fb seems to start with a photo, and comments on the photo, a lot of which are googled.

Re: Facebook is not for me!
I rather like FB I found it easy to use & really easy to post pics. If anyone is interested the original & unmoderated unnofficial P&O FB group was really most pleasant for quite some time, but as the bloke who "owned" it did no moderating it was eventually overrun, so Carol Woolston formed a new group called "Cruiselovers" some of your are familiar with. As none of the trouble makers were let in or quickly removed it turned into a very pleasant & friendly group.

Re: Facebook is not for me!
I migrated to Facebook when the P & O site went belly up and found my way around(ish) so I didn't lose touch with everyone. The other day however, I was astounded with some comments on the P & O page about the community site and I did bite back a couple of times!

Re: Facebook is not for me!
I was talking about FB Lulucat, someone mentioned they didn't like the P&O FB group so I gave some background. On wide open FB groups you can get people just joining for a joke, also some who think "cruising'' is something else.

Re: Facebook is not for me!
Facebook is insecure regardless of the settings and it is also a mindset for children with a focus on how many friends they can accrue, a great product for certain uses but cruising isn't one of them ... imo.

Re: Facebook is not for me!
As I've said I don't do FB - all seems rather pointless to me - I never understand why someone thinks they are important enough to tell someone else that their child has just wee'd etc (I only know this because I happen to work with people who think this is riveting
)
I'm with Meg, I prefer a forum, and FB is not for me. I like a bit of cut and thrust though - but I prefer my 'friends' to be people I 'know'.

Re: Facebook is not for me!
Must disagree about the unofficial one, most regulars found it so unpleasant they formed another group leaving behind those who just wanted to argue. The P&O page isn't a group as such it's their page, no real chat on there usually people looking for help or think it's about ferries or even Australian ships. I do agree that the forum format is better with headings & subsections with information being retained.

Re: Facebook is not for me!
We do it because of the worldwide nature of our Dog Show friends, they post news & pics of the shows as they happen. On the Cruiselovers group we keep in touch with those on cruises, we have someone on Oceana doing a daily(almost) blog with pics. There are no cliques or groups within groups as can happen with Forums, forums must be welcoming to new people who are often nervous of posting.Lulucat wrote:As I've said I don't do FB - all seems rather pointless to me - I never understand why someone thinks they are important enough to tell someone else that their child has just wee'd etc (I only know this because I happen to work with people who think this is riveting)

Re: Facebook is not for me!
I completely agree, and I think that P&O did that successfully: the welcomes, the blogs and everything else. Luckily we now have this forum to fill the gap. I also understand that FB keeps people in touch around the world.
I believe that most people will split into groups where they have the same interests/thoughts - in exactly the same way that you have your group for dogs - it is what they call 'like-minded' people. The comments about 'cliques' is a bit of a joke if you want my opinion - you say you have a 'closed' group - what else is that but what you refer to as a 'clique'. Do you like them or don't you - you really can't have it both ways.

Re: Facebook is not for me!
FB closed groups are different to secret groups, they are cliques or just plain private, a closed group is simply one you need to join to participate in, nothing sinister, it just prevents all & sundry posting rubbish. Like minded people are different to groups acting as one against targets or perceived outsiders, it's more of a feeling or atmosphere, sometimes I am sure people don't realise they do it.Lulucat wrote:I completely agree, and I think that P&O did that successfully: the welcomes, the blogs and everything else. Really? I am sure that is your 'take' on it but equally someone else's 'take' on it would be quite different. Do as 'I say', not do as 'I do' perhaps?

Re: Facebook is not for me!
A link to P&O ' jtd ' ... obviously, although that needs to be done with their blessing but would they respond favourably ?
Tell you what ... I am reasonably optimistic that P&O could agree as it would give them time to sort out their own site and they would of course also appreciate that this site compliments rather than competes with their own.

Re: Facebook is not for me!
For me Facebook is a wonderful tool to keep in touch with family and friends who do not live near, I have all my settings to private and am able to share my pictures with those who I wish to see them. I am a member of a private group where you have to prove who you are before you can join but for very good reason as it is a forces site. Facebook can and is used by those who just wish to cause trouble and send abusive posts onto groups but you can protect yourself if you wish.
