We're under instructions from the software house that provides our database NOT to install it (preferably not even download it) for a few months at least, as they don't yet know if the application will be compatible. As I can access the database from home, that means I can't install it on my laptop either. I'll try it out on my desktop, thought, but I see users have only one month to try it and uninstall. I should have thought that, for the majority, one month is not long enough.

I bought a new lap top today. This old HP Tower has been getting creaky since the graphics accelerator crashed last December, and to my hrror the Pavillion lap top has come with Windows 8.1, which is horrible!! I have managed to load MS Office 2007 on the lap top which I have on the tower. I need it for a presentation on Tuesday, but so far I am finding the new Windows very difficult to navigate compared to Windows Vista. To make things worse the lap top has no separate LH and RH buttons, you have to tap once or twice or whatever.....help! I'm going insane.

Is Microsoft totally in the grip of juvenile geeks who just love to set traps for poor old pensioners like me?

It advertises free Windows 10, I dont think I can stand starting with another geek inspired load of rubbish.

I understand that Microsoft are trying to distance themselves from 8/8.1

Have you asked the supplier of your laptop if you can upgrade it to Win 7?

I did not honestly think Stephen that it would be so rubbish. However I am using it now and trying to get used to it. We bought it from John Lewis (Sue's idea!!! She is addicted to the John Lewis vouchers, although I keep telling her you lose out on higher prices and lack of in store support.). It doesn't let me do anything much without signing in to a Microsoft account and when I try to open one it keeps asking for Hotmail email address which I do not have or want. Explorer opens to Bing which I do not like. I am off to P C World tomorrow to get some advice and try different software on it. It is loaded with stupid games and silly juvenile 'toys'. Sill with a bit of luck it wil drive my Powerpoint presentation for Mission to Seafarers on Tuesday and that is the first hurdle.

I cant understand why these geeks have to go away from drop down menu boxes. Its a bit like push button handbrakes on cars I have serious safety concerns about them.

"We can do it, therefore you will have it" seems to be the rule with programmers these days.

It should have asked you for your default choice of browser, not just plonk you straight into Explorer, and even then, you can change your default search engine.

I've downloaded W 10 but not installed it as yet. My problem is that I have a video editing program called Magix Movie Edit MX plus which I have been using with W 7 Home Premium and I have been informed by Magix that it will NOT work with W10. They haven't explained why but a bit of research seems to point to MEP MX Plus reliying on Windows Media Player which isn't included with W 10. Their latest version apparently will work but I'd bought this earlier this year and it refused to recognise my internet connection which was necessary for activating the program. (I got a refund but I've still got the disks)

I think I'll wait until I've finished my next cruise video before I upgrade. It may just be a sales ploy!

I also have a Canon printer which may need a new driver, but they haven't ascertained whether it'll work or not.

Caution is the key. At least I know I can revert to W7 if nothing works providing I do it within 30 days of activating W10.
Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

I'm okay with 8.1 having got used to it. It was a pain that much of my old XP software hag to be replaced. My current reticence is going to 10 is that the same will happen again, but I will probably have to do it in time as 10 will be supported longer than 8.1.

I suspect 8.1 was in effect 9. However my granddaughter when counting to 10 goes 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 rather than 1,2,3,2000,XP,Vista,7,8,8.1,10 so clearly she's not a windows child! :crazy:

From what I can gather Romig, Windows 8 was such a flop with Microsoft that they wanted to put some distance between Windows 8 and 10. Whether this is the real truth I don't know. Another rumour, or joke, depending how you look at it is the number 9 is unlucky in Japan.

There is also a belief that some software checks for Windows 9x (ie 95 and 98), and this would be confused by the introduction of Windows 9

Still waiting for my turn, that's the problem with an end of alphabet surname. I am hoping that Win 10 might just sort out some spasmodic issues with my lap top, otherwise I think I might have to invest in a new one.

Still planning on sticking with 7 ... £1 to a 10 Bob note v10 will need another 8 gig of RAM.

Stephen, are you using 10? If so how are you finding it? The reason I ask is that like Frank I was forced to buy a new desktop on Saturday as my old one of twelve years went bang!! :lol: :lol:

The new box came with 8.1, which to be honest I found to be OK. It also came with the option to upgrade to 10 so I would like to know if it is worth upgrading now or should I wait? :eh: :eh:

If you've got any "must have" proprietary software, I'd say wait. Our database supplier won't let us download it at work until they've spent several months testing it.
