I wouldn't let one person with a bit of a "Goldie" complex put you off promoting your worthy cause on here. If it is something close to you and you feel it is worth sharing, good for you.
People have varying degrees of compassion and varying degrees of selfishness when it comes to charity giving but luckily there are plenty of people out there who do take part in such things and help their chosen cause and well done them.

I sincerely hope you are not referring to me. I have no idea what you mean by a Goldie complex. Of course I have compassion for anyone suffering from cancer or any other illness and I take objection to the fact that you would insinuate I haven't. If indeed you were referring to my post.

ITWA
I don't find your post distasteful, I simply don't think this forum is the place to ask people to donate to a charity. I'd love everyone to donate to the charity researching my son's condition but I certainly won't be asking anyone on here to do so. That's just how I feel personally.

Hi travel writer....seeing that it was my post that opened up the door to people airing their views on the subject of charity fund raising l feel l should give you and others a reason why l responded in the way l did.

My initial thoughts were that your post hadn't received many responses so being one who generally likes to contribute to most threads l thought l would do so to yours but in a manner in which it felt appropriate considering our decision to cut back on all charity donations. Up until last year we had been donating £43 a month for the past 13 years to 3 different charities, I have in the past also sponsored a couple of members on this furom for their fundraising efforts (l may do so again) which is why l found your 'buried head in sand' comment a little unfortunate. l can however understand why you would feel a little put out...as would l if l had received some of the responses your thread has received, nethertheless donating or participating in any charity event is a personal choice and from what l have read on this thread people have given you honest opinions as to how they feel about some aspects of the charity business.

If it makes you feel any better John....you should read some of the comments l've received after asking for donations to my favorite charity....but hey!.....l don't take them personally and neither should you :)

Regards

Yeah right. I heard he's still having therapy.

In that case Stephen he must have bumped into you after meeting me...an experience that has left me still receiving therapy.

Btw...I see you've changed your email address again...

This being the case perhaps the "ModPlod's" can take the post down and cast it into the bucket full of sand which so many appear to have their heads buried in.

To those who believe that there is no place within a cruse forum for such posts then I deeply feel sorry for them. Perhaps I need to look for an other home?
I will move it to ' General Chat ' for that is probably where it belongs if truth be told.

Many of the people who posted on here have experienced cancer first hand and have shown you total respect by giving you an honest opinion and revealing, in some cases, their inner thoughts ... in reality it is not their fault that you are unable to cope with it, but perhaps given time you will see it in a different light.

Either way good luck with the appeal.

I didn't find you post distasteful, just inappropriate. I don't have MY head buried in the sand, as I'm sure most forum members don't with illnesses that can be life threatening or life limiting. Many of us cope on a daily basis with conditions which will never get better, just gradually get worse over the years, almost a living death. BUT the big C has so many resources put into finding a cure and alleviating the symptoms that I find that other life limiting conditions are cast aside in the be all search for a CURE for cancer with little thought for other conditions.

I am glad that YOU are recovering ITWA, BUT some will never have that chance as there is no treatment for their condition.

I wish you well, but I do find your response to the honest replies by members rather sharp just because the majority of replies were not supportive of your OP and not what you anticipated. When you have been a member for longer, you may get it.

Well there you have it travel writer (John) a mixed bag of opinions mostly pointing in the same direction but all acknowledging how devastating cancer and indeed other illness can have on those who are inflicted with them...whilst also remembering the impact such illnesses have on family members also.

I personally would like to put this one to bed now while acknowledging it hasn't been a pleasant experience for you John.

What I have learnt over the years on this and the old forum is that even those with the right intentions can find themselves hurt by encounters with other members, as indeed was I when I first joined the old forum.

You mention that you may move to another site which of course is your prerogative but I certainly hope. and I'm sure others will agree with me when I say it would be a real shame should you chose to take this action.

So John please allow me to pass on what some members said to me when I left the old forum...give yourself a bit of time, don't make any rash decisions and get posting as soon as possible....Btw... it still stinks in Venice cus they still haven't fixed their bloody sewerage systems yet!...am I right or am I right?

Wise words Onelife. We would all like to contribute when someone 'rattles a tin' in our face so to speak but as many have said ' you have to draw the line somewhere'. Wishing you well ITWA and hope you stay

My mum's recovered from cervical cancer, is in remission from bowel cancer and they are mystified by the sudden disappearance of the cancerous tumour they found on her kidney, so I would support cancer charities but for the concern that not all of my donation would go to research. How much of the donation goes to administration? I have heard (so this may be wrong) that as much as 90% goes to admin. The recent antics of Batwomanjelly do not help build confidence in the way charities are run.

I wish your campaign well nevertheless, John, and hope you won't stop posting on Cruise Community.

Thanks for that, Jo. Frankly I find those salary figures disgusting. I consider myself well-paid for what I do, and I get nothing like those sums. Thankfully, not every charity makes a deduction for expenses.

I couldn't agree more with you. Although we have had members of our family suffer and die from cancer it does seem as if everything is focussed on finding a cure for cancer. For those of us watching someone's life slowly becoming as you say a living death because there is no cure and no hope, it does seem that no one cares for those conditions.

Well I did sign up for the Dryathalon and I only have one more day on the waggon, mind you I can't say I missed the booze but I was a little bit dissapointed at the lack of sponsorship from friends and family but one or two in my circle were doing it too and there are quite a few charity events in Nottingham during September.

Still so long as nobody turns up on my doorstep tomorrow to seduce me with a bottle of Courvoisier VSOP I will have made £50 for the charity, mind you I made it up by £23 myself. I used to get more than that Carol singing as a kid lol.

The Nottingham Beer and Cider Festival is a week on Friday so I had better get into training, this is the one time a year I really go for it so bring it on.
