Re: How to deter cold callers
Have to confess that I did think Ray's budgie story was amusing, it also had a happy ending for the old lady and with no harm done.
However I was certainly a tad surprised that she let them into her house in the first place. Our duster sellers seem to look like they've seen too many hard times so for me they can deffo stop outside, oh yes ... out of interest we do not buy their goods nor indeed do we buy a copy of the ' Big Issue ' but in both cases I generally give them a £1 coin in the belief that that amount would be their profit margin if they had made a sale.
They are, it seems to me, trying to earn some sort of a living as opposed to bleating at the Welfare Office for hand-outs, this aspect of their life style I do genuinely respect.

Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

Stephen....If you'd mentioned wellies and a flock of sheep along with the sweeties for the children you might have just got away with it

l don't know about the 'big issue' sellers but the majority, if not all of the door knockers /duster sellers are being exploited by organised groups of illegal traders who make rich pickings from those who are more than likely just topping up there benifit payments. I've had them all, everything from the x offender to the supposedly deaf and dumb knocking on our door. Some may wonder why they always come across polite whilst trying to flog there overpriced goods..well the reason for this, other than them playing the sympathy card is that they don't have a pedlers license to sell door to door goods, which is a good way of not drawing adverse attention to their ilegal activities...They probably call you ever thing under the sun when you refuse to buy anything, which incidentally is what we should all be doing as this would leave the little beggers more time to look for a proper job and not carrying on with a job that is illegal....and fleecing little old ladies out of ten quid
