Re: Help please with a Computer problem

Unread post by towny44 »

I have a new problem on my laptop, when trying to open a pictures folder from file explorer I get the following message "This file does not have a programme associated with it for performing this action. Please install a programme, or if one already is already installed, create an association in the Default Programmes control panel."
Do any of you computer experts know how to resolve this issue, permanently if possible?

You have a full stop in the folder name?

You say 'opening a pictures folder'. Do you mean folder or file? You should be able to open a folder to see what's inside it.

If 'file' what is the extension on the file name? If it is a picture theis should be .jpg or .tiff or similar. If there is no picture viewer associated with that extension then right-click on the file and then click one 'open with'. You should then see a list of options of programs that can open this type of file. Try some Googling on 'Windows file associations'

The operating system 'knows' what to do with a file by the file extension - the bit after the full stop, like .jpg or .doc

I was thinking that if a folder had been named with a full stop in it, the OS may think the folder is a file and report "This file does not have a programme associated with it for performing this action."

I have not used Windows for over 15 years now, so my memory of how it treats these things is fading and in any case may well be wrong now, though I see Bob is thinking along the same lines.

We need to know whether we are talking about folders or files first.

I was talking about folders where I store photos, sometimes by holiday, sometimes by month.
However the problem is partially resolved, I had been using my normal double click operation to open these folders which then shows the pop up message I typed in my first post, I now find that by right clicking and choosing open I can open the folders as normal, thank you to QB for prompting me to look for the folder properties which led me to try the open feature, but the double click feature is still not working.
