There are 2 things in this world that really pee me off:

1) People's intolerance of other people's religious faith

2) Muslims.

Lioness, in some ways I can see what you mean as I don't have any particular faith either but I'm sure the election of the new pope does have great significance for lots of people and as a civilised ( supposedly ! ) society we surely should tolerate and respect other people's beliefs. If the t.v. Coverage annoys you , - and I agree there has been a lot, just turn over or turn off.

I was a bit miffed last night that a programme I wished to watch was jettisoned due to the "breaking news" that the white smoke signified a new pope was decided upon. There followed 30 minutes (at least), prior to the unveiling, of pictures of the crowds in St Mark's Square while Ed Stourton spoke to people who were just rehashing what had already been said for the previous 24 hours. The "Breaking News" banner on the screen didn't change during this time.

Surely now that we are all digital (I think), there could have been a link on the main channels directing those who wished to watch a whole bunch of nothing over to BBC News 24 channel?

Hi Jacknian.

I understand how much the new pope means to a lot of people, and I wouldn't attempt to denigrate that.

My beef was with the replacement of an existing programme with shots of the crowd, before the identity of the new Pope was announced. As such, I was unable to switch over to my preferred programme.

R, I think you have a claim for some compo here. Ask Lioness to ring up for you as she does a fake American accent so your complaint will be more believable

There was black smoke from a house two doors from me last night but I think they may have been burning something unpleasant rather than trying to elect a pope !

So am I right to understand that it's acceptable to have a pop at the Pope and Catholicism but not Jews, Muslims etc.

It's acceptable to point out the flaws and misconceptions in an ideology, but it is NEVER acceptable to have a pop at the people who subscribe to that ideology.

I agree with your thoughts Alan.
I do not think it is good manners to be rude about someone's religious beliefs, after all most of us are born into 'religion' and taught it from an early age.
Respect costs nothing.

I think the Op's post speaks volumes about their lack of understanding about the effect a new pope has on the world in general, many political leaders will be waiting to see what type of Pope he will become and many millions will be led by this man.
The OP shows a sad lack of awareness of the real worl and the effect this Pontif will have on it
I could equally ask who cares what the views of a retired trolley dolly matter, when they were only in charge of peanuts and blankets, but that would be impolite and arrogant, wouldn't it??

Dark Knight, I believe your post to be unfair. They serve drinks and hand out sick bags too.

It has been reported in the media that the new pope has made comments in public about The Falkland Islands - he obviously believes that the islands and the people down there belong to Argentina.

I think it was an unwise thing to say in public, and it worries me.

Actually I simply asked a question "do we really care about who it is". I disagree entirely that the Pope has any effect whatsoever on the politics and running of the rest of the world. Yes he is the leader of Catholics, but that is all. What did the last one do that had any effect on most people's lives? They couldn't even take care of serious sexual abuse in schools and other places - they chose to hide it and simply move the priest that did it. 40% of the clergy are gay, but they are still against gays. We have too many people in the world and yet they oppose contraception.

You can make fun of my previous job, but it was wonderfully enjoyable and I saw most of the world for nothing, stayed in fantastic hotels, so that's OK :-) We were there to get people out of a burning aircraft - the peanuts were just an extra!

Hi Jean,

Anyone who makes fun of the work undertaken by those who did or do the same job as you just doesn't realise what it comprises. The job you did is blasted difficult, stressful, tiring - and I have huge respect.

Lioness, as a devout Roman Catholic I really do care about who it is.
I think you are making sweeping statements which are totally unfounded, serious sexual abuse happens in all walks of life, I do not make any excuses for it happening, it is devastating. You probably cannot understand how important the Pope is to me and my faith so no point in trying to explain.
My daughter is cabin crew so I defend you on criticism of your former career, too many people think that trolley dollies are just there to serve food and drink, in the event of an emergency these people come into their own.

I don't like peanuts as it happens nor, in all honesty, am I that keen on Popes but we did survive an engine that blew up on take off as a consequence of the action taken by cabin staff ... ;)

Well said MoBy.. We each have a job to do and they are all important in their own way - cabin crew do a wonderful job and take some real flack from some miserable paxs... Where would we be without them 8 hours to Barbados with no food, wine or anything......not for me thanks.

So where is the respect for the Pope and the job he does ? Where is the respect for the millions of genuine Catholics who do not condone what "some" of the clergy have done.
DK was only making a point.

DN surely made two points ?

1) The impact of the appointment of a new Pope

2) The impact of Trolley Dollies

In any event I didn't see any intended disrespect with anybody's posting, a bit of humour notwithstanding ;)

If someone is picked to hold an 'important' position by a bunch of other people all of whom select each other, and that person then goes on to make life miserable for other people then I have absolutely no respect for that person.

It's nothing better than a blasted club for boys - and these people can dictate that abortion is not allowed or that gay relationships are not allowed? I am not religious, but I do believe that if a woman doesn't want a pregnancy then it is her choice and hers alone. Similarly, if two people want to make a gay choice together for life it's up to them, nobody else.

Those are two quite different situations, I know, but it is for individuals to decide what they want to do and not a person who has been voted in by a very small number of people.

This is purely and simply my personal point of view. I truly believe that people should be allowed without any pressure from any quarter what they want to do in their lives - but then they have to realise that they have to bear the responsibility for their actions of course.

I apologise if my view upsets some people - but to those people I say be of good cheer you are probably never going to have to be in the same place as me.

Em :)

Em, well said. Agree wholeheartedly. This new pope is probably a very good man, lived a quiet life and has done a lot for people including those with HIV. However, now he is Pope, what will he do? He will visit some far flung countries, people will throw themselves at his feet, but what will it actually do to change anything? Nothing.
