Sorry. Is Strawman a compliment i misunderstood?
Merv, we will never win a discussion with Ken, I think if I said I agreed with everything he said, he would find some way to find fault with my reasoning.

It is neither a compliment nor a criticism of the person, and it is definitely not 'name calling', it simply says that the argument being used is fallacious (either deliberately or accidentally).

In this instance you chose to base stats of what is overtly an international issue purely on a headcount of Brits, that meant the premise on which you responded was invalid. Remember, the only thing I asked was 'where is the irony?'.

It's not fallacious at all. Hamilton is a British (?) driver and when he speaks he is presumably representing his country. I understand he is looking to support an academy to develop the skills of black youth into F1 but nowhere have I seen that this is a global initiative.
It would help if some people could accept there are opinions other than their own.

I agree, that works both ways, but equally some have to accept that they shouldn't start crying because they cannot defend their argument against scrutiny.

That kind of rhetoric does you no favours whatsoever and only leads to ill feeling.

But yet, as a moderator, you have been silent and have even joined in when the insults are being thrown towards me ... equally they didn't do you any favours.

Even when someone attempts to take the heat out of an argument you persist in stoking the fires. It says more about you than it does about me. There are times when it is best that I do remain silent. You may not like what I am thinking.

So why did you need to personalise that comment? Why did you not say some have to accept they should be able to defend their argument......?

The full quote was 'some have to accept that they shouldn't start crying'.

It wasn't personal.

However, it may have been language that some people felt was directed at them personally.

But there's nothing new going on here, I've had comments said to me both directly and indirectly loads of times, and from multiple people piling on at the same time - it seems that it's an accepted part of the culture of this board.

Not sure why people who've given out loads of comments to me are now getting bent out of shape about it.

BTW it wasn't personal, it wasn't aimed at any poster, however I suppose, if some people see the characteristic reflected in themselves then they may take it personally.

Alternatively I like to see if those that dish it out can take it as well.

You seem to be, and Mervyn almost certainly is, as he's mentioned the word 'bully'. A word I have done my best to avoid using, but have often felt while using this board

Over the years, there have been stacks of comments, including from you, starting off on the lines of 'some people should...... (insert comment as appropriate) which I know damn well were directed at me. Another thing that seems to be part of the accepted culture on this board, but now, for some reason, is being questioned

If you check back, you will see I often include humorous elements, maybe they are too subtle. For example my earlier rugby comment.
You may not like what I am thinking.
Whereas I very very rarely get annoyed, I find the cut and thrust of robust debate incredibly entertaining (and often funny), therefore I am happy to put what I am thinking in pixels. As I have said before, it is not my fault if people are incapable of defending their position.

And there we go, back to the norm. Instead of just saying 'no, that's not the case', you have to try and belittle me as well. That is another thing that is part of the culture on this board.
