How many thousands will have to die before the government gets a grip of social distancing?
Yesterday l witnessed two Shropshire council workers arrive in a lorry to clean a storm drain outside our house...social distancing was not observed at any point. Construction workers are going about their work building a barn in fields across from us...They are not observing social distancing and neither will many thousands of other none essential workers.
Why can't our government get this?.....l will be phoning my MP tomorrow.....may l suggest you do the same..

What can the government do? We all know what we are supposed to do and the instructions are clear. People have to take responsibility for themselves and at this moment in time some are showing themselves as incapable. They seem to think it doesn't apply to them. Of course if they get coronavirus they can always blame the government, the NHS, anybody but themselves. Unfortunately it's the number of people they pass the infection onto which is the greater concern.

I assume you believe that your darling Theresa would have managed this crisis far better??
Of course if you just stood/sat/reclined there and did not approach them, observing the prescribed social distancing, and berate them for their actions, then perhaps we should blame you for not getting a grip.

I was thinking about this social distancing and refuse collectors yesterday. How can they distance themselves. They all bundle into the lorry and work together when doing they're job. I'm sure they distance themselves as much as possible. Do they wear masks, I don't know.

They could self isolate but I guess it depends if you want your bins emptied and pink bags taken away each week or are prepared to stock pile for weeks maybe months on end which then presents another health hazard. As for taking it to the recycling centre yourself, forget it, its closed. At least here it is.

The other thing is garden rubbish. What are you going to do with your grass cuttings and any other garden stuff that needs getting rid of. Fortunately our kind neighbour has offered any spare space in her green bin that gets emptied each week, for now. Fine if you have a compost heap or bin but not everyone has that luxury, and with the weather gradually warming up its surprising how it all soon mounts up.

Of course you could just leave it and let it go wild which will please the bees, butterflies and other wildlife.

Dorset Council offer their rate payers a Brown lidded Garden Bin ( same size as one's landfill / environmental version ) which is collected once a fortnight, it cost approx £50 per annum.

Why don't Essex County Council offer the same ?

Our council has stopped garden waste collection so that they can concentrate on house waste and recycling

I read a recent article that said Brown bins would be low priority if there was a shortage of bin men.

...would probably have been their response so why put myself in that position.... besides this is a matter for Shropshire council to sort out and after my phone call to Peter Dunne this morning l hope action will be taken.

With regard as to whether Theresa would have done things better l have no idea but from where l stand/sit/or recline l think the government is doing a good job at sending out mixed messages while appreciating no government would have all the tools to fix every problem.....social distancing apparently being one of them. One, none essential worker has the capability of infecting thousands.

Yes we do, but have never had the need for one, but that may change depending on available space in our neighbours bin. And as someone else said, how long before this service is temporarily cancelled as a non essential.

Well that answered my question.

Just contacted my local council who are working from home, and there is a waiting list for a green bin so they are not taking any more orders. Some people have been on the waiting list for more than a year. Apparently they are trying to get another lorry to help with demand but that's currently on hold. So I think I can safely kiss a green bin goodbye for the foreseeable future, although she did say you can still register online and at least get on the list. Can't see much point in that really.

What they can do is be clear about what is essential and what isn't.....building office blocks or working on HS2 or cleaning drains don't fall into the essential category to my mind. So what they should do is just say all construction work must stop apart from that which is helping fight this pandemic.

It's not too difficult Foxy..........no doubt when millions are infected ( if they arn't already) they will be playing catch up again

I wonder why Sweden is not shutting everything down, it will be interesting to see if they can hold their nerve if their infection rate escalates rapidly.

There was a report, with photograph, on a Facebook page for Lymington, of an elderly woman who queue jump charged the security arrangements controlling entry to a local supermarket, and barged inside. Once inside she pushed people out of the way and if anyone remonstrated with her she coughed at them deliberately and was abusive. I despair at what sort of country we have become.

I do have some sympathy small businesses such as drain cleaners, gardeners, car valeting, who work outside. Unless they get too close to their customers then there can surely be no risk, and they need to work.

Similarly if our daughter 6 miles away manages to get us the eggs, and flour etc., which we need, then I will drive over to pick them up from her doorstep. However I heard yesterday that the chief constable of Dorset will arrest anyone for driving their car unnecessarily. The precautions are good, but we shouldn't become a jobsworth's paradise as a result. I surely cant infect anyone sitting in my car with the windows up? Can I? Perhaps we've all got to stop breathing.

Yes absolutely a good reason for going, either going shopping on the way there and going back from shopping when returning home - they can't moan about that. I'm all in favour of stupid people just out for a jolly being stopped but not in your situation. I've just unpacked my Ocado order using disposable gloves, one hand to carry the bags in from the doorstep and the other to put things away. I'm very lucky to have shopped with Ocado for 10 years since breaking my ankle and have managed so far to get slots. Things seem to be slowly getting easier in that maybe people are stocked up with toilet rolls and tins of soup for years to come!

Hi Frank,

I'm sure you won't mind if i disagree with you....Drain cleaners..there were two of them, both of whom were clearing and lifting the drain cover together. Gardeners....they'll be touching garden gates, hoses etc. Car valeting...would you really want your car to be valeted knowing what could be left behind?

We are all having to take a hit whether that be reduced wages (Gov subsidised) or loss in our pension pots...another 769 people have die in Spain this last 24 hours.....we should all get real and understand that stopping the spread is the only way to reduce fatalities...one person can infect thousands!!!
