Re: Football thread 2015/2016
Vardy's goal against Germany one of the best I've seen since Gazza's, and Alan Mullery's. I still think there is too much square passing and going backwards by England. I was getting very frustrated watching them when they were 2-1 down.

Re: Football thread 2015/2016
A shake up of the England team was long overdue. It was nice to see good young players in the team (as opposed to the old guard/regulars) and was pleased to see them making a good impression. Whilst the defence looked decidedly dodgy, the goals, especially from Vardy and Kane, were something a bit special.Frank Manning wrote:Vardy's goal against Germany one of the best I've seen since Gazza's, and Alan Mullery's. I was also pleased to see England attacking with pace as opposed to the usual square passing, passing back, keeping possession and going nowhere until the move breaks down altogether. Roy has obviously been watching the likes of Spurs, West Ham and the City.

Yes, and the England defence made the Germans look better than they were. They are still up there with the best in the world for diving. Cant wait for the Holland match to see if he sticks with the young blood. I am in no hurry to see Rooney and Co back.

Re: Football thread 2015/2016
On the evidence of the midfield last night and the forwards on display I would say Rooney is finished. He has done very little for a while now. There is some good, young talent coming through at the moment and whilst Spurs are our main contenders for the EPL title at the moment it's good to see they are bringing along English talent. Pochettino has done a great job there, as indeed he did at Southampton.

Vary did very well, one of the great goals. Perhaps a big club will be in for him in the summer, Southampton even

Southampton don't need him. In fact I don't think he will fit in easily anywhere in the premiership. Perhaps Luton?

Maybe he could play in the defense, that's the area we need improving.oldbluefox wrote:On the evidence of the midfield last night and the forwards on display I would say Rooney is finished. Just stand him in the goal. That would block out most of it.towny44 wrote:Maybe he could play in the defense, that's the area we need improving.oldbluefox wrote:On the evidence of the midfield last night and the forwards on display I would say Rooney is finished. Re: Football thread 2015/2016
In successive Euro and World Cup campaigns he has failed to impress, as have many of the old guard. It's time to refresh the team with new talent, something the Dutch and Germans do constantly which explains why Germany, in particular, are always there or thereabouts whereas we are invariably the nearly men.
Sad news for Butland and for Stoke.

With the negativity aimed at Mr Rooney, he has been outstanding for both the Premiership and the three Lions

You are indeed correct Graham. The operative words are 'has been' as I think he has now had his day and it is time to move on with the new kids on the block.
Best wishes

It's an unbelievable journey for us Graham. Whether we win the league or not it has been quite a season. To win the PL title would be an amazing achievement and particularly sweet in proving all the pundits and experts wrong who have predicted we would fail and all others who have made 1001 excuses why we are right up there. I feel a Kevin Keegan moment coming on!!!!

We take nothing for granted towny.towny44 wrote:oldbluefox wrote:Let's just hope your dream does not end in tears.
In 1963 we were top of the old Division 1 and on for the Cup and League double. We went into decline and finished up 4th in the league. Meanwhile we were playing Man Utd in the Cup Final. They were 4th from the bottom and we lost to them as well.
However had you offered us Champions League at the beginning of the season we would have snatched your hand off. In the summer we have been invited into a soccer tournament with Celtic, Paris St Germain and Barcelona. Now who amongst us would believe Jamie Richard Vardy (formerly of Stocksbridge Park Steels, Halifax Town and Fleetwood FC) playing against Messi & Co. We are not used to this at all so we'll enjoy it while we can.

I always knew she had class, Frank!!!
Adrian Childs was reporting from Leicester market this morning and seemed to think it was just a formality. I wish they wouldn't do that as there are still 21 points to play for. Only when/if we are over the line will I be celebrating. Until then the suspense is killing me.

Re: Football thread 2015/2016
My pre-season prediction was the Foxes to go down so that shows my knowledge of football Foxy
I also fancied Luton to go up !!!
I'm pretty sure that they will hang on in there now and be well deserved Champs.
I'm in this sweep where you pick a team from each division before the season starts.
It's then simply the most cumulative points wins.
No changes !
I'm currently 2nd and the first prize is £600 so I'm now desperate for Pompey to pull their socks up
I have
Arsenal (most have Chelsea or City)
Middlesborough
Wigan
Portsmouth
Obviously no one has Leicester or Burton or Northampton

Re: Football thread 2015/2016
Funny thing was that I was recently asking our knowledgeable and totally unbiased
window cleaner if he thought Vardy was cheating with his tricky ' leg manoeuvre ', the following week he got carded for it and now looks likely to miss the game where the Foxes win the title.
Pity that as in spite of it he does very much deserve to be there at the kill.

You only need 3 points even if Tottenham were to win all their remaining games, and don't forget that they have still to play us at White Hart Lane!
