Since 'gazania' is only 7 letters I assumed you knew (or is that a perk of the mods)

but the bit in brackets counted towards the character total - I still can't get away with less than 10

The answer is spaces eg two charcters with eight spaces in between & and it compresses the gap. I think it looks neater than a whole string of dots.
