Benefits, entitlement - it's all semantics and I couldn't give a tuppenny cuss what it is called. All I know is I worked all my life, much of my time unpaid, paid all my taxes and never claimed any benefit, unlike the freeloaders who have never worked for any good reason since they see benefit as a chosen lifestyle and for whom work is beneath them. Cut out abuse of the system, including black market labour and most of the arguments surrounding benefits will disappear.

Must go - I'm missing Jeremy Kyle!!!

Jeremy Kyle broadcasts almost every day, rather an unique show much of a Marmite TV programme

I caught it several months ago, and i am now hooked :x

Well worth a "looksee"

Hope you and Sue are well

OP well intended thread has been slightly "derailed"

""The annual fuel allowance "could" be taxable, plus the trusty Bus pass "could" be means tested"""

So my opinion counts for nothing. Why do I bother posting. I worked for the DHSS and unless things have changed (maybe they have), a Retirement Pension was certainly not regarded as a benefit.
Like most retirees we paid into a system for something for years when some people were merely a twinkle in their father's eye. We are now receiving a pension we are ENTITLED to, we are not receiving handouts.
Sorry Graham but I'm fed up of the same rhetoric no matter how TIC.

MJ
your opinion is as valid as anyone else's
why wouldn't it be?

however the govenment and the pensions act define the state pension as a benefit, now matter what people want to call it
and that is my point
:tired: :tired:

getting back on track and with apologies to Graham, non residents should not ,in my humble opinion, receive the winter fuel allowance when they don't live in the country the payment is designed for

Semantics as OBF says. Life is a benefit, the air we breathe is a benefit, you can call it what you like.

As Emjay says, we paid in, while we were also paying our mortgages, or rent, raising our children on proper home cooked food, often without a TV because we could not afford one, in my case wearing my Dad's hand down suits to work, and in work. Real work, exports. Retiring at 71. So I for one dont want anyone telling me that I am 'on benefits' because I am in fact realising my hard earned savings. Its every bit as much and more, my money, than the bonuses that playboy city slickers are paying themselves at our expense.

It's extremely cold in parts of Spain during the Winter and some of the ex-pats have been paying their stamps even while living overseas so perhaps they should receive their Fuel allowance ... I would however draw the line at them having a Bus Pass.

;)

Moby

no allowances should be paid to non residents, no matter how cold they get, it is a loophole that needs closing along with many others in the benefits system, which includes pensions,

Bleedy Heck

What have I been a gone and diddly do

Just quoted from my friendly Seniors monthly interesting missive which I thought was of interest of the vexed liability on our generous taxed gentlefolk to finance the ever growing old farts of these great UK Isles

Methinks that perhaps, if it is a fact, my faithful Seniors mag headers are not too unreasonable

BTB . . .Seniors have suggested a very good discount website for
Tenna his/hers "whatsits"

Lubooo all, and have a very peaceful weekend

In rural areas it's probably the bus passes which are keeping the buses running. Scrap the bus passes and the bus routes will go. Everybody loses.
No truer word OBF the rural buses that run where I live are a lifeline to the elderly who cannot drive or have no car and suit people like me who are trying to reduce their reliance on the car and be more green. Our local County Council are looking to save £3.8million by cutting rural bus services and had a public consultation. There has been such an uproar, they have had to give up on the idea and look at other ways of saving. Residents found out about dodgy tendering contracts within the Council with £500,000 disappearing from County coffers, and the Chief Executive leaving in the local paper, £500,000 pays for alot of rural buses.

I agree and it would be very easy to take the fuel allowance away from those on higher tax. It's done through the DWP anyway, so they have all that information. Also, the £10 Christmas Bonus could easily be removed.

Plus my everso generous 25p (less tax) for attaining the ripe age of 80 years, me thinks some autocratic well paid person is taking the "wee wee"

Punters please help
