And of course the colour of my Aston Martin DB5.
My Bond three-wheeler with a single-cylinder 197cc Villiers two-stroke engine was British racing Green, I'll have you know! Unbelievable performance, it went like a squashed hedgehog.

Well me'n Foxy said this Forum has become too quiet, what can we do. I said, I'll bait dark Knight with a trailer for formal nights, and see what happens.

Q.E.D. "Such fun!"

Frank
if that is your best attempt at baiting the Dark one, you really need to up your game
you would have had a more spirited response if you had mentioned smoking or religion or children on cruises
I have long since accepted some people have the need to dress up, to make themselves feel special and to impress the gulible

At least it helped pass the time today and you are quite right, Frank, the forum had gone very quiet for a while. I was beginning to think everyone had gone on a cruise.

Ah but Fred Olsen Line....definitely not P&O, why their officers dont even wear swords! Anyway, fear not Darkest One it may be Cunard for me from now on, if things are more formal on those ships. Although I remember that when I was at sea myself apart from the Queens and Caronia, they weren't that special. If you wanted class it had to be P&O. Or Orient Line.

Cunard will never see me on board as their faux class system is repugnant and panders to the snobs, who throw money away to look down on the serfs.

Do I detect a certain amount of hypocrisy here? DK is so disparaging about black tie yet he writes, 'I do a few black tie dinners during the year, so have to have one'. You can't have it both ways when it suits.

Actually I think our DK is much posher than he likes to make out with his rugby jollies, his golf club, fine clothes, smart car and his business expenses. Much as he likes to play as 'one of the boys' he is actually rather posh, don'cha fink?

Not necessarily. He might just be of an age, like me. To my mind, a good knowledge of the classics, inter alia, is far more important than a dark jacket with a shiny collar.

To my mind it doesn't matter whether you prefer casual or formal, it's all a matter of personal preference which renders all of this 'my boat is bigger than yours' business exactly what it is - a load of nonsense.

Being one of the few on this forum who have also cruised with Thomson's on there cruise ship Spirit, the difference between them and P&O, is that Thomsons only have one formal night per week, as compared with P&O who have two.

On the cruise I went on with Thomson, the turn out on formal night of men in their Penquin suites (to use a DK expression) was as high as any P&O cruise I have been on.

Also if DK is thinking of cruising next with RCI, don't want to frighten him, but they have as many formal nights as P&O, and again on our cruise, the turn out of men in their Penquin Suites was just as high as P&O.

I am given to understand on celebrity the turn out is even higher.

Personally I don't feel the need to dress up, it's just my personal preference, re DK I am in agreement with OBF.

With reference to penquin suites are they not the ones with tails, never seen those on a cruise, seen many a dinner suite, tux or dark suite, but never seen anybody in tales.

Although with reference to cummerbunds, I still think they are a bit circus ring master. :D

Perhaps....just perhaps...the Darkest one is a champagne socialist? Just joking DK I can detect that behind your diffident manner, you are really classy. ( :?: ) Probably wears a smoking jacket every evening.

Popeye the Sailorman sacked his cumberbund (said it was a pain in the a**e) so he bought two waistcoats which look very smart,.
keeps him all tucked in and tidy

We like dressing up and looking smart on any night of a cruise, or any night out at home, nothing to do with trying to impress, being
a snob or whatever. Think I have slight OCD though as I colour co-ordinate not only dresses with shoes, handbags, rings, bracelets etc but also my nose piercing (sorry Old Blue Fox thought I had better warn you about that). No tattoos though!

I have a couple of black cumberbands plus a tartan one that comes out on New Years Eve with the White Jacket.

Have worn these guys since 1980 whatever but the question is .... which way up should they be worn, pockets / pleats facing up to catch the soup or down to allow it to drip onto one's trousers.

You should be able to put your theatre tickets in the pleats so that they don't fall out. It should be worn at the level of your belly button.

Dear Quizical Bob,
DK was right after all. I must be a 'pleb', because I have been wearing mine the wrong way up all this time. Thank you for putting me right.

Cummerbunds and black shirt studs,

Don't worry, Frank. I'm sure nobody ever got close enough to notice and I very much doubt that anyone on a P&O ship would know the difference anyway. Now you can wear yours with smug pride safe in the knowledge that it's the right way up. I also have one, I find it tidies up the join between the top and bottom halves :)

Ideally the colour should match your bow tie but this is only a cruise.
