Re: How did we do it before the internet?
well in the 'old days' there wouldn't have been a problem as I would simply have gone to a passport office or nearby suitable government office and have a simple renewal stamp.
Never heard of that Boris, must have been decades ago as I have had a passport for over 45 years, yes since birth you lot!, and have never just had it stamped for renewal, anywhere. Hmmm!

Re: How did we do it before the internet?
I love the Internet, any thing I want to know or I am interested in purchasing I just look up on the Internet to where It can be purchased at the best price. Even how to carry out repairs on various items also user instructions.
I also love my IPad on which I can do virtually everything I used to do on my desk top computer, which I hardly ever use these days. I take my IPad everywhere as it is extremely portable, on holiday very handy for down loading my photos straight from my camera or camera card.
I have a very good app called pocket, and if I find an article or something I want to read or I am interested in, I Just drop it into pocket for reading later when I have more time even when off line.
The app gets rid of all the advertising bumf, so you can concentrate on the article, rather than read black on white, it gives you the opportunity to read white on black, which does not seem to strain the eyes so much. You can also tag items, and store them, takes up very little of the iPads storage capacity, would recommend it,

Talking of Internet shopping - yesterday Mrs63 declared that her iron had "packed up" and that if I want anything ironing that I had better find her a new one.
Due research done - best price found (cheaper than Amazon) - ordered at 13:30 - arrived today at 10:00. All done and dusted, tried out within 24 hours.

Funny how things come back to you...
years and years ago....before we had the kids.. and were pretty hard up,we used to love the chinese frozen ready meals from Iceland as a weekend treat.
Well...Slimming World is bringing a range of ready meals out in a few weeks time and Iceland are going to be the only place where you can get them..so Iv just been looking at their website,, as the nearest one is a few miles away from here with a view to book a slot and order a few for the freezer !!!
I then saw the chinese meals we used to buy....
getting good reviews....hmmmmm might just have to try a few to see if they still taste as good...

We used to drive around all the shops to look for deals and then have a good old fashioned haggle over the price .... sometimes it even meant telling the odd porky about what their competitors were willing to do it for.suespud wrote:I just at times wonder how on earth we managed before it came along!!!

Keep this under your hat but, if you go onto google and type in/search for "google" you will break the internet.
Never tried it myself, but I saw this on that IT Crowd documentary, so must be true.

I would think that the Internet has proved to be a vital tool in combating social isolation, particularly amongst older folk, those living alone or bereaved. We are fortunate in having our family live close by. But I know of friends who see their grandchildren growing up via Skype. Not perfect but it has brought many benefits and enhanced many lives

I am very thankful for skype myself. With our son living in Vietnam, we are able to speak AND see him regularly.

Re: How did we do it before the internet?
Related to all this, did anyone see the survey about what people wanted on a cruise - and top came variations on free Wi-Fi / internet.
Part of me understands that where people want to use email etc. to stay in touch with home.
But a bigger part of me is sad that for others surveyed being able to play their internet games, stream video and music etc. is more important than seeing new parts of the world, or enjoying other aspects of cruising.
If the internet is more important than itinerary, entertainment, good food, meeting new people etc. then surely you might as well stay at home glued to the tablet/smartphone/games console and save a lot of money too?
Plus as a further thought, I wonder if those wanting free wi-fi realise the considerable technical and economic difference in providing it in the middle of a UK city and in the middle of the Bay of Biscay?
I wonder if the answer is actually something we encountered at some hotels in the US and Canada. A free basic wi-fi service good enough for emails but with video and music streaming barred. And a faster premium service at a charge.

Whilst I can see where you're coming from Merv - you could say the same thing about on-board television/gym/shops. Just because they are there does not mean that you have to use them

Re: How did we do it before the internet?
True, you could. I suppose I was just surprised that the top priority was something not special to cruising. I guess I would have been even more mystified if better shops was the top demand. Other than the one which sells the odds and ends you've left at home, like toothpaste or aspirin, I've always thought the shops are a greater benefit to the cruise company as recipient of the revenue than me as the payer!!!david63 wrote:Whilst I can see where you're coming from Merv - you could say the same thing about on-board television/gym/shops.
