I found if anyone was a consistent or previous problem it was best to block them, the equivalent of walking away from them, they usually disappeared. We have dog exhibiting friends all over the world so FB is handy for that.Jaczs+ wrote:For me Facebook is a wonderful tool to keep in touch with family and friends who do not live near, I have all my settings to private and am able to share my pictures with those who I wish to see them. I am a member of a private group where you have to prove who you are before you can join but for very good reason as it is a forces site. Facebook can and is used by those who just wish to cause trouble and send abusive posts onto groups but you can protect yourself if you wish.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear, I wasn't meaning people being nasty to me I was meaning those sorts of people that go onto groups to just be abusive and put inappropriate threads like when somebody dies and they all gloat that sort of thing.
I am lucky I have never had to block anyone nor would I wish to.

Having used Facebook, I prefer a forum with headings/topics. Facebook is a series of comments without any structure. Having read various comments on the forum, it struck me that there are a number of people who obviously know each other from the out of action community and at ease with each other, and newcomers may feel that it could be hard to penetrate what appears to already be a tight knit group and be put off by that.

Good point Mo, but we all do try and welcome new posters.
Perhaps someone should start a "Introduce Yourself" thread...or perhaps ask David to start a new sub-forum?

You are lucky to not have had to block anyone, but then if you only post in secure groups you are unlikely to?Jaczs+ wrote:Sorry I didn't make myself clear, I wasn't meaning people being nasty to me I was meaning those sorts of people that go onto groups to just be abusive and put inappropriate threads like when somebody dies and they all gloat that sort of thing.

BUT surely if you came across someone like you mention above you wouldn't wish to see any more posts from them? People who are tempted to do that sort of thing are at least partly filtered out by a closed group, like this one really, you need to be a member to post.

I would think 95% of this forum know each other after all it was set up by David for the members of the P&O community so I fail to see how it is a tight knit group it is merely a replacement for the P&O forum ( albeit temporary or permanent )Mo2013 wrote:Having used Facebook, I prefer a forum with headings/topics. New members have always been welcomed to the CC as they will be on here, unfortunately someone will always be the "newest member" most manage to survive.

If I ever get random things showing up on my page because a friend has linked it I change my setting so it will not show on my page. I have never needed to block anyone as I only accept people who are my friends by that I mean I know them. I am always astounded when I see people with hundreds of friends and I think to myself REALLY!!!!!! How many do you really know?JOHNTHED0G wrote:You are lucky to not have had to block anyone, but then if you only post in secure groups you are unlikely to?Jaczs+ wrote:Sorry I didn't make myself clear, I wasn't meaning people being nasty to me I was meaning those sorts of people that go onto groups to just be abusive and put inappropriate threads like when somebody dies and they all gloat that sort of thing.

Most closed groups on Facebook has members determined by other members, you know as in "Let them in they are fine" but if you don't really know them as a person that will always lead to people being in there to stir up trouble or to report back to others about what is being said in there. The closed group I am in you have to prove who you really are before you get in so I know I am speaking to who I think it is because I know it is them.

I agree Jo. When I first found " Ship Happens" years ago, I was a little timid (yeah me) to post, as lots did seem to know each other, but then as I read I realised they were a lovely bunch of people.Dancing Queen wrote:I would think 95% of this forum know each other after all it was set up by David for the members of the P&O community so I fail to see how it is a tight knit group it is merely a replacement for the P&O forum ( albeit temporary or permanent )Mo2013 wrote:Having used Facebook, I prefer a forum with headings/topics. I had already booked a cruise on Arcadia by this time and the people on SH told me about the P&O cruise community forum.
So again I "lurked" for a while to see how things were done and then joined in.
Yes I felt like a newbie, but that soon vanished.
Many people do know each other on this forum and I think that is a positive thing. It means the forum can move on quickly, there will be none of the "getting to know each other" as on new forums.
Lots of comments on fb from people I dont think post much, have said how good it is to have it back and be able to read all the comments from the names they recognise.
WELL DONE DAVID

Re: Facebook is not for me!
I do have SOME people as FB friends that I don't know personally, but most are people I actually know or feel I do. On FB a friend is really saying OK you seem OK? On the Cruiselovers group we do have some people we don't want as the group was formed to avoid them, other than that we give anyone a chance, no problems so far.Jaczs+ wrote:If I ever get random things showing up on my page because a friend has linked it I change my setting so it will not show on my page. Re: Facebook is not for me!
I came across this site after my daughter told me you didn't need a Facebook account to look at the P&O page. IMHO, this is superior to the P&O Community forum.
I'm still waiting for Facebook to tell me how they knew who I work for when I gave them no indication of that - I feel that there is something very sinister about FB and I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

Re: Facebook is not for me!
Facebook is nothing more than a series of both open and closed groups.
I do read several groups on it (mainly cruising and a couple related to other interests I have) but I find it very disjointed and difficult to follow.
It is also obvious that many barely read the threads, they just post random thoughts.
A forum is generally much more coherent and allows ideas and thoughts to evolve ... as well as allowing proper discussion.

So you're the one! From what I hear, Facecloth is falling out of favour, especially amongst the younger generation.

Yes it is i have 4 Grand children who where F/B mad even to the point that if they where going out they would post where they where going on F/B
But not now all of them have moved on to other sites that offer more privacy
I use F/B as a keep in touch with family scattered all over the world
But agree there are some weirdo's on it

Re: Facebook is not for me!
My only relatives are in America. My Sister went there 55 years ago and had 3 children, followed by grandchildren and great grandchildren. Spending just a few weeks a year with them used to mean I missed out on many of the family events.
My Sister and I speak over the phone a couple of times a week but FB has kept me posted with regular photographs every week.
This year is most likely the last time we will spend time together but knowing I only have to press the FB sign I will still see them a growing up.
It works for me.
