If it has GPS it will pick up the coordinates. After all most Satnavs don't have a SIM. The later ones like my Tomtom which do only use it to pick up the traffic updates. The issue with some map apps is they don't carry the map on the device but use an online version so once you move you fall off the edge if it can't get on line.Raybosailor wrote:Am I missing something here? I suppose you might save the route and use it offline but there won't be any turn by turn commands

Just checking mine for tomorrow's flower demo and it won't recognise any post codes (although I can enter the address manually) so it looks like I might be in the market for a new one soon ?!

Having had both I deffo prefer Garmin.Onelife wrote:I'm now leaning towards the Garmon nuvi 2508 LMT-5 it has good reviews and it retails at a price that won't break the bank.

You will need to have a genuine ' Garmin ' brand power cable that goes from the device to a 13amp wall socket so that you can learn how to use it, the instructions are very comprehensive but are on-line. The reason for the power cable arises because the batteries do not last very long if the device is not connected to a power source be that a power cable or the in car connection that is of course provided.
ps ... do NOT be tempted to buy a cheapo cable, the device will know and reject it
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

Re: SatNavs
My Garmin battery lasts for ages without being charged, in fact if I am only doing a journey of less than an hour I don't even plug it in. The Garmin is often stored for months before I use it again and it still sparks into life without being charged and we sometimes use it in walking mode when in a strange town but the battery has never let us down.
Batteries need to be used as batteries and not as a bypass for mains adapters, my son has the same laptop as me and it is always plugged into the mains whereas mine is only plugged in when the battery condition is showing about 25%. Son is on third laptop battery while my battery is the original factory fit.
Charge-Use-Recharge that's the way a battery likes to be used, only batteries where the charging unit has some kind of equalizer built into it as in electrically powered vehicles and good quality cordless power tools should left plugged in for long periods.

Your'e right Merv the Hudl2 does have built in GPS which is something the iPad WiFi without cellular model doesn't have, I was toying with the idea of buying a Hudl as Cheryl has the iPad so a cheapo tablet will do for me.Mervyn and Trish wrote:If it has GPS it will pick up the coordinates. Problem with GPS without cellular assistance using a satnav app you might get a few blips in built up areas but only using one will answer that one.
Cheryl has some Tesco tokens that I might beg from her when we get home so watch this space.

Nothing secret about it, John, just go into Google Play Store and look for satnavs. Navigator is quite good.

If I have to buy a new one - I only want a very basic model to get me from A to B - no fancy features needed. What do you recommend?

Re: SatNavs
Standalone satnav - I have a TomTom One at the moment, which is perfectly adequate for my needs (I also have a road atlas !!)
I have just managed to get it working again so I could be OK but I think it is trying to tell me something so I will look at a replacement !

well, whatever you get, make sure that it will cope with future map upgrades - I forked out for TomTom 6 software for my Nokia, just before they released v7 and the latest version was not smartphone compatible.qbman1 wrote:Standalone satnav - I have a TomTom One at the moment, which is perfectly adequate for my needs (I also have a road atlas !!)
