If countries do have to go their own way to safeguard their tourism industry, how long before the net contributing nations start to wonder what's the point of being in the EU.barney wrote: 24 Oct 2020, 12:29I suspect that you are right Merv.Mervyn and Trish wrote: 24 Oct 2020, 12:25Portugal has already said it will make provision for rapid and efficient passport control for the UK. If it's not EU wide they won't be the only individual country to do so.
We will probably see lots of bilateral agreements, bypassing Brussels.

You're right. Not doing politics nor getting sucked into ill informed slanging matches. In this case merely quoting a verifiable fact.

Re: Life After Brexit
On a more serious note after this desperate, last ditch attempt with an e-petition has anybody any news of how the trade negotiations are going? Interestingly Mr Barnier seems to be spending much more time coming over to London whereas it was TM scuttling off to Brussels at their every beck and call.
My guess is there will be a compromise of sorts, maybe a transitional period as the new deal takes full effect (viz fisheries) but I have no idea what the final outcome will look like. The main point is we will be out of the EU.

Re: Life After Brexit
The art of compromise is that nobody comes away completely satisfied.
The simple point that Brussels is now taking us seriously is a step up from TM's policy.
My prediction is a thin deal that will constantly be revisited as events play out and be continuously improving for both sides.
That's fine by me.
After January 1st, everything changes.
I must say that i was very disappointed with Andy Marr on Sunday interviewing the French Europe Minister (whatever that is )
The French guy said that IF the UK wants access to European Markets, we must concede on fisheries.
Now, we all know that's total rubbish and the UK will continue with access to European markets, deal or not, but Marr didn't even challenge him.
It's almost like they have their questions written down and continue with them irrespective of response.

Re: Life After Brexit
Had it been anyone from the UK negotiating team he would have been all over him like a rash. I doubt Mrs Merkel will welcome that sort of response but France is always scared stiff of its fishermen who will put up burning barricades and block ports at the drop of a chapeau.barney wrote: 03 Nov 2020, 12:21
