Surely not - this is Britain! Looting ..... well strong measures need to be taken. It's almost beyond belief, and the people who take advantage of the misery of other people are despicable.

I would just like to mention that although I'm not an expert in drainage, my husband is a civil engineer, with experience in drainage, so I asked him about current design legislation. That's why I passed on some information - I thought it might be of some interest.
I thought you maybe worked in the industry GillW and an expert. I understand where you are coming from, but unfortunately as has been seen in quite a few places, the mitigation put in place on floodplains is not sufficient. However this is exceptional weather, I live up North, we are renowned for our rain. We have friends in Berkshire, I can recall them saying about droughts, how their garden was bone dry, the grass brown and no rain for weeks. Now its the opposite, this time last year we had all the weeks of snow, ice and freezing temperatures. It is hard to second guess what the weather will be from year on year.

The police chief in charge of flooding ...
sorry but I could not resist

Not quite - the snow did not start until mid March

I remember the freezing temperatures way before March in mid February because we were living in a rented house
and it was bl**dy freezing for weeks :(

There was snow in January and it was cold but the long heavy spell of snow was in March - I know as I missed it all as we were in New Zealand where it was summer

Although we don't live in the most prominent of flooding area's here in Essex we have families without homes due to flooding, they don't have 'bolt holes' or second, third or fourth home's to retreat to but are relying on family friends or neighbours to accommodate them. We don't live on flood planes we are more likely to have hose pipe bans then having to deal with the excessive rainfall. There has been no looting, just an enormous community spirit that has for some proved a lifeline in these unpredictable times. Please do not brag (not all peeps, I understand) about how lucky you are but take this opportunity to use your good fortune to help others. I know we will.

Thanks Tinker, but its not just me. We have a 'Freebay' set up for all those affected by flooding that have nothing, and I mean nothing. The people donating their own things to those in desperate need is astounding. Little kiddies are giving their Christmas pressies away. Count your blessings not your pennies.

Having just read through this and the Thames Valley thread, it is heartening to see that most people are decent enough to feel a degree of empathy for the families affected. Boris, you would give Walter Mitty a good run for his money, what a load of ******** you spout. Bally well stick that in your pipe.

Hi Helen

I do what I do and I don't go on about it. My conscience is completely and utterly clear. Enough said. Thank you for your offensive comments.

I have searched the internet for a UK wide appeal, similar to that of the DEC when disasters happen overseas, but can only find this:

http://www.cla.org.uk/your-area/south-w ... elief-fund

It's only for this area, the Somerset Levels, but they have suffered the longest, since before Christmas.

If anyone can find something central, as it were, where help is given to those most in need, please post a link.

Was heartening to see today our local Tesco very proactive in raising funds and food donations for those affected on the somerset levels
The collection lady said that she was overcome with emotion at the generosity of local people
