You can certainly do so by telling them that you will ring back on a legit number to ensure that they are indeed who they say they are.

I had this discussion with a major High Street Bank some years ago when they wanted confirmation and details that I would not provide regarding a pending money transfer to Canada.

But ring back on a different phone, such as a mobile, so you don't get caught by the scam of keeping your phone on hold and playing mock dial tone to fool you.

Had a nice chat with a foreign sounding chap from Talktalk this afternoon.

I asked him how he was going to prove he was from Talktalk and he rattled off a whole load of info including name address and talktalk customer number.
Sounded as if it might be genuine.

He said they were registering lots of errors on my broadband.

I said that was probably because it wasn't connected to anything.

He just hung up.

Genuine ? don't think so.

Same here, allatc.

We have had at least 3 calls over the last couple of weeks. I just put the phone down now. In the end, I did phone talktalk direct on a number I had from when we signed up (I did phone my sister first just to make sure I was no longer connected to the scammers). The chap was very helpful and set up number recognition for us and also last number barring if we wanted to use it. I was also concerned because we usually get an email advising how much our latest bill will be and date it will be taken as a direct debit and we hadn't had one for our October use. He was able to advise of the amount and date it would be taken.

Apparently, those who stay with talktalk are supposed to be receiving the chance of an upgrade of some kind in December.

I'm working on the assumption that with all the bad press talktalk have received, they will now make sure their security is extremely tight. I was relieved to get a letter from them saying that none of our personal information or sensitive financial date was taken.

I have been with talktalk for the past eight years and I can say that I have always had very good service.

As to Virgin have they not handed there broad band service over to talktalk, but it will still be run by Virgin , all so have Virgin cut back on some of it tv programmes. but are still charging the same.

Indeed, I have had the very same call and played along. However it soon became clear he wanted access to my computer and he hung up once I started asking questions.
Clearly a scam. Well done allatc. Hopefully the more people become aware of these scams the less successful the scammers become.
As for TalkTalk we have been with them for the past six years and have always had good service.
I was taught to be cautious

Welcome to the forum, shipslog.

The change you mention only applies to ADSL customers, not cable. I haven't heard anything from Virgin about reducing the number of TV channels - mind you, I watch so little TV, I probably wouldn't notice if they did!

We have Virgin cable and haven't notice any reduction in the number of tv channels they provide - mind you I only watch a handful of them. There are vast numbers that we never look at.

Latest farce with Talk Talk is that lots of folk on their Community site have been complaining about either not receiving or delays in receiving emails (including us!) since Thursday, it seems to have been sorted today fingers crossed
