Re: Saturday Mail
OOhh, a dress code thread.
I didn't realise it was a dress code thread, as the title suggested it was something to do with postal deliveries at the weekend.
How do we feel about some of the P&O fleet doing away with jacket required nights? Personally I think it's a good thing, especially for the men. I wouldn't like to spend many of my holiday evenings in a jacket. For the women, most dresses are interchangeable, so can be worn on jacket required nights or evening casual nights - the dress codes are a lot more flexible for women.
A two week cruise with 4 formals and 10 evening casuals is fine for me - my personal preference would be 2 formals and 12 evening casuals, but I go with the flow, and adhere to the nights code anyway.
The dress code is just one aspect of the cruise. I'm a happy P&O cruiser ( a lot happy than many people it would seem), so I'm not 'going elsewhere', just for the sake of a couple of formal nights.

I certainly don't see that many sailing up Southampton Water??? How many of these have the relaxed, sensible, modern policy on what to wear?Mervyn and Trish wrote:291 to be precise (Cruise Market Watch 2014 figure) - surely enough to find one to suit your tastes?Quizzical Bob wrote:NOT MANYMervyn and Trish wrote:Then don't go on Adonia. Well if some of them don't, it rather proves that your assertion about the preferred dress code for the majority is cobblers doesn't it?Quizzical Bob wrote:I certainly don't see that many sailing up Southampton Water??? Re: Saturday Mail
but if Qbob did some research and found a cruise line like the one he hankers after
what would he have to moan about, if it's not dress code , it's embarkation, if not that it will something else related to P&O
or he could just be a right old moaner and nothing will change that

Just because I am an original thinker with a spark of originality does not necessarily mark me down as a moaner. i merely like to point out where things could be improved to the benefit of everybody.Dark Knight wrote:but if Qbob did some research and found a cruise line like the one he hankers after

For us it's Southampton or nowhere, the hassle of other ports offsets the convenience of cruising.Mervyn and Trish wrote:Well if some of them don't, it rather proves that your assertion about the preferred dress code for the majority is cobblers doesn't it?Or are you wiser than all their marketing departments put together?

Of the other lines I am only aware of Cunard that provide for the incurably pretentious, or have I missed some?

Right, so .... it seems that you don't like "Black Tie" DJ etc, or ties, or jackets, but, still no one is saying what they would like to wear to dinner? Q B suggests relaxed, sensible, modern clothing? Describe please. This argument is going round and round, but a simple description would assure me that that doesn't mean tee shirt, shorts and flip flops, and I am sure no one posting means that. Do they?

Not at all daunting for the male of the species! Got to admire the point that Karl Stefanovic was making by wearing the same suit on TV for a whole year. It is regrettable that clothing choices are the cause of so much pressure.

Unfortunately, even with the dress code as it is, that is exactly how some interpret it. Some looked as though they had worn their clothes for weeks and had slept in them. Scruffy individuals!!!!jay-ell71 wrote:assure me that that doesn't mean tee shirt, shorts and flip flops,
Now would I, or would you, want to share a table with them, no matter how pleasant they were?
Personally I am quite happy with smart casual which, for me, means smart trousers or chinos and a long sleeved or short sleeved collared shirt. However I also appreciate the formal nights and the chance to dress up in my finery and to see others similarly dressed.
I was taught to be cautious

To me, smart casual is the same as 'resort casula' in many other parts of the world. Toes and shoulders covered and some sort of collar. No football or other sports shirts, please.jay-ell71 wrote:Right, so .... it seems that you don't like "Black Tie" DJ etc, or ties, or jackets, but, still no one is saying what they would like to wear to dinner? Knew I would be setting the cat amongst the pigeons. Actually, for us, the dress code is one of the least important aspects of choosing a cruise. Itinerary is far and away the most important and, most years, so far as we are concerned, P&O seem to come up with the most attractive itinerary (at the time of year we want to cruise) so we continue to sail with them. However, we are fast running out of new places to visit. After we have 'done' South America and New Zealand next year, there is really only Alaska, the Antarctic and East Africa, none of which seem to be accessible without flying. We are thinking of switching to River Cruises that we can get to by train.

Thanks Gentlemen. Exactly. Sharing a table with a scruffy individual would not be nice.
I guess this topic will keep coming up, but I think we could now put this particular one to bed now.

Agreed Mobyplod
some folks interpretation of smart casual looks like they live in a skip
QBob
resort casual...ooh get you, you sound like some pensioner living in a retirement "resort" in Florida, it is not a resort it is a ship
Basic rule is for me never wear jeans and tee shirts after 6.00pm....simples

Possibly not, unless they wear socks with them, in which case they should be thrown in the brig.
