Re: Windows 10
You can do all that with Ubuntu - indeed, if Firefox is your browser of choice, you won't see any difference. It's also more secure than Windows because fewer people use it so it's not worth the effort of attacking

Re: Windows 10
But installing an alternate operating system is not for the faint hearted.
I have not used Ubuntu but one thing that would concern me would be driver compatibility for devices such as printers, web cams, etc. and whether some Windows applications such as Skype would be available.

Actually, David, installing Ubuntu is a doddle. Last time I installed Ubuntu I, too, was worried about drivers, as I had a job to find them for a Windows rebuild, but everything worked perfectly. Skype is a multi-platform application.

Re: Windows 10
Unless you have very specific hardware or software that you need to run, and cannot replace, then an upgrade to Windows 10 is a good choice. I have done about 300 computers (of varying types, makes and ages) over the last year and have only had a few minor issues (all of which were easily sorted out, but probably could have been a problem for less technical savvy people).
I use various incarnations of Linux on a day-to-day basis and quite honestly if you are less computer savvy you would be better sticking with Windows. Ubuntu, Mint etc. work very well until you have to something a 'slightly different' then you find yourself having to get your hands dirty to try to salvage something ... at least with Windows you only have to ask one of the neighbours kids for help, linux can require more specialised (and expensive) help.

I've been quite happy with 10 with no significant issues. But I came to it from 8.1 which is not such a big jump.

Re: Windows 10
If it is any help for others, there was one ongoing issue that I was having with Windows 10 and it was in relation to USB 3 devices. They worked fine on W7 but could be flaky on W10. I had tried a couple of different cables, thinking that may the problem, but no joy.
I then read an article about how the length of a USB cable can affect reliability so I tried plugging a much shorter cable in and hey presto the devices started working 100% reliability. The issue was my old faithful USB extension cord that comes from the back of the PC and provides me with a easy to access port at the side of my desk - it was just too long.

What USB 3 device do you have Ken. I have two USB 3 ports but have never had the need to use them.

Mostly external drives - much much faster than the older USB 2.0 devices.Stephen wrote:What USB 3 device do you have Ken. I have two USB 3 ports but have never had the need to use them.

I had no problems using a short ( 1 x metre ) lead with USB3 but my brand new external drive ( Seagate ) from Amazon didn't work with Windows 10 ... so sent it back for a full refund.
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

That's unusual, normally the seagate drives are a bit more tolerant of cable length?Manoverboard wrote:I had no problems using a short ( 1 x metre ) lead with USB3 but my brand new external drive ( Seagate ) from Amazon didn't work with Windows 10 ... so sent it back for a full refund.
Personally I am not a fan of seagate drives though, had far too many failures.

Re: Windows 10
The drive was NOT compatible with Windows 10 in that it was not fully recognised for the purposes of doing a system image ... no problem with USB3 or the cable as far as I could tell.Kendhni wrote:That's unusual, normally the seagate drives are a bit more tolerant of cable length?Manoverboard wrote:I had no problems using a short ( 1 x metre ) lead with USB3 but my brand new external drive ( Seagate ) from Amazon didn't work with Windows 10 ... so sent it back for a full refund.

Re: Windows 10
It appears Win 10 had a massive upgrade yesterday, it took forever to finish it off this morning and so far it is running much slower than before, not a happy bunny.

Re: Windows 10
Yes, it was updating and slow yesterday but today it's fine.
For the benefit of anyone still uncertain, I have been running 10 since close to day 1 and have had not the slightest problem. For what I need it for, it is perfect.

Re: Windows 10
Windows 10 was always a bit iffy in recognising my USB ports. After a big upgrade yesterday, it doesn't recognise them at all, so I'm now reinstalled Windows 7. I've been thinking about it for long enough, but have finally got around to doing it. Problem is, though, I don't have the drivers so am having to track these down on the manufacturer's website via my desktop PC.

Re: Windows 10
I bought a new computer last Friday and spent all afternoon setting it up - W10 updates took forever!
I also bought a new printer which was even more complicated to set up (that took all day Saturday)
Anyway, now after 3 days I have W10 and Office 365 up and running along with Edge.
I think I have the hang of most of it.
|Does anyone have any hints and tips?
W10, Office 22016, Edge
thanks

Get rid of Edge - it is the most incompatible browser (even by MS standards) that there is.Meg 50 wrote:Does anyone have any hints and tips?
If you want to have a more "user friendly" start menu take a look at Start 10 - OK it costs $5 but that is for life
